Biography

Regina Silveira (Porto Alegre RS 1939)

Regina Silveira is one of the most important artists in Brazilian contemporary art, internationally recognized for her work as a multimedia artist, printmaker, painter and teacher. Her career stands out for her solid academic training and intense teaching activity, aspects that were fundamental in consolidating her relevance on the Brazilian and international art scene.

Regina Silveira earned her bachelor's degree in Painting in 1959 from the Instituto de Artes da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (IA/UFRGS), where she studied with important masters, among them Aldo Locatelli and Ado Malagoli. Regina Silveira also obtained a teaching degree in Drawing from the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), broadening her training in the field of visual arts.

Regina Silveira deepened her artistic training in the early 1960s at the Ateliê Livre da Prefeitura de Porto Alegre, where she took classes with leading artists such as Iberê Camargo, Francisco Stockinger and Marcelo Grassmann. In 1967, Regina Silveira received a scholarship from the Instituto de Cultura Hispánica to study at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters in Madrid, an experience that broadened her theoretical repertoire and her presence in the international art circuit.

In 1969, Regina Silveira was invited to teach at the University of Puerto Rico, beginning an important stage of her academic career. Upon returning to Brazil in 1973, Regina Silveira took over the coordination of the printmaking department at the Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado (FAAP), a position she held until 1985 and which strengthened her influence on the training of new generations of Brazilian artists.

In 1974, Regina Silveira joined the faculty of the Escola de Comunicações e Artes da Universidade de São Paulo (ECA/USP), where she carried out a significant part of her academic research. Regina Silveira earned her master's degree in 1980 and completed her doctorate in 1984, strengthening her work both in artistic production and in the university environment.

Regina Silveira lived in New York between 1991 and 1994 with grants awarded by internationally prestigious institutions such as the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and the Fulbright Foundation. In 1995, Regina Silveira was an artist in residence at the Civitella Ranieri Foundation and, in 2000, she received the Prêmio Cultural Sergio Motta, one of the most important Brazilian awards in the field of art and technology.

Over the course of her career, Regina Silveira has established herself as a central figure in Brazilian contemporary art. Regina Silveira stands out for the way she brings together artistic practice, research and teaching, as well as for her significant presence in the international visual arts circuit.

Critical Commentary

The work of Regina Silveira, a central reference in Brazilian contemporary art, reveals an ongoing investigation into systems of visual representation, marked by dialogues with important artistic sources of the 20th century. According to the critic Tadeu Chiarelli, Regina Silveira's poetics was deeply influenced by her contact with the work of Iberê Camargo, from whom she absorbed an understanding of technique as a means — and not an end — as well as a critical stance toward crystallized codes of representation.

Another fundamental reference for Regina Silveira is Marcel Duchamp, whose work allows the artist, through irony, to subvert and reinvent such codes, expanding their possibilities of meaning. This closeness to Duchampian thought is evident in works such as In Absentia M.D. (1983), in which Regina Silveira paints on the floor enlarged shadows of iconic works by Duchamp, starting from the physical absence of the objects and their empty pedestals.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Regina Silveira produced sculptures and silkscreens still linked to the geometric-constructive tradition. In Labirintos [Labyrinths] (1971), she began investigations with geometric grids and perspective systems. In the series Middle Class & Co (1971–1972), she addressed the fragmentation of the individual in contemporary society, introducing a critical dimension that would become recurrent in her work.

The appropriation of photographic images became a central procedure in Regina Silveira's practice, expanding the semantic dimension of her works. In photomontages printed in offset, conceived as simulacra of postcards — as in the series Brasil Today: Natural Beauties (1977) —, the artist sets images of urban landmarks and recognizable landscapes against elements of degradation, such as rubble and car cemeteries, putting pressure on the symbolic construction of the Brazilian landscape.

Throughout her career, Regina Silveira has incorporated various technologies and media, including heliography, microfilm, xerox, electronic panels, video art, videotext and mail art, reaffirming her pioneering role in experimentation with new media in the context of Brazilian art.

In Anamorfas [Anamorphs] (1980), Regina Silveira deepened her investigation into the subversion of perspective, starting from photographs of everyday objects that are redrawn with distortions — compressions, dilations and folds —, destabilizing the viewer's perception. In Simulacros [Simulacra] (1984), the artist creates shadows from invented projections, in which the object casting them is absent, establishing conceptual relationships with Dadaism and Surrealism.

The use of the shadow as an index of absence became a central element in Regina Silveira's work, proposing a reflection on the limits of representation and its relationship with perception. This investigation expanded into exhibition and architectural space, when the artist began to intervene directly on walls and floors with shadowed silhouettes in paint or latex.

Works such as Vértice [Vertex] (1994) and Escada Inexplicável II [Inexplicable Staircase II] (1999) explore the relationship between image and architecture, creating illusions of depth and spatial instability. In more recent works, Regina Silveira has extended her practice into urban space, using vinyl and light projections on building façades. In Lumen (2002), she investigates light and its visual multiplication, evoking effects similar to those of a kaleidoscope.

Regina Silveira's work also engages with social and political issues, addressing themes such as power — in Monudentro (1987) and The Saint’s Paradox (1994) —, violence — in Encuentro (1991) — and the social role of women — in Carrinho de Chá [Tea Trolley] (1986).

In addition to her artistic production, Regina Silveira has played a fundamental role in the training of new generations of artists in Brazil, having influenced names such as Ana Maria Tavares, Rafael França, Mônica Nador and Iran do Espírito Santo.

Critiques

"With Inflexões [Inflections], Regina Silveira seeks a way to dialogue with and revise some assumptions of the grammars of vision and thus conducts an eminently plastic investigation. The interactive and conventional advertisements of furniture stores are the starting point for the construction of a series of unusual objects that advance into space in all directions (...). If, through the emergence of this ´degenerative´, transforming power, the Inflections seem to respond to the object-based proposal of Surrealism, Regina Silveira's intention is not, however, metaphorical. (...) Testing the containing power of contours, Regina Silveira takes the perspective system to its utmost limit. She multiplies points of view, vanishing points and distance points, which destroy perspective from within, but she does not entirely renounce it. She adds a new perspective, usually curved, to the frontality of advertising images (...). Personal design or anti-design, the tension of the Inflections points to a vector of mutation, of instability, of ´uncertainty´, to a structural ´disharmony´, (...) a tangible sign of that ´disordering of order´ that Regina Silveira has proposed since the Anamorfas [Anamorphs]".

SILVEIRA, Regina. Regina Silveira: inflexões. São Paulo: Galeria Luisa Strina, 1987.

"In the specific case of Regina Silveira, the maturing of her poetics seems to have been determined by contact with the work of two artists apparently opposed in the stances they took in their careers: Iberê Camargo and Marcel Duchamp.
From the first (whose student the artist was in Porto Alegre), Regina Silveira would have learned his underlying existential anguish, which led her to break with her initial conception of art based on an extremely rigid, conservative training. From him she also absorbed the view of technique as a means and not an end; finally, Camargo seems to have made her doubt, for the first time, the codes of representation crystallized by tradition.
From her contact with the work of Duchamp (which took place in the 1970s), Regina Silveira realized that the path to the maturing of her poetics was to recover, in a critical key, those previously disdained codes, reinventing them in order to draw other possibilities of meaning from them. She became aware that art could be not merely the emanation of the artist's anguish before the world, but rather an organized system full of rules to be called into question by the artist.
As healthy residues of her experience with Iberê Camargo, Regina Silveira brought the somber tone of her works, the taste for the expressive deformation of signs, and an unrestricted distrust of the effectiveness, nowadays, of art and its institutionalized codes. With Duchamp, this distrust turned into relentless irony, into a mordancy aimed at destabilizing crystallized concepts of art".

CHIARELLI, Tadeu. Artista e orientadora.  In: MORAES, Angélica de (org.). Regina Silveira: cartografias da sombra. São Paulo: Edusp, 1996. p.215-216.

"In Regina Silveira's work, the shadow follows Platonic assumptions and indicates the possibility of transposing the real into the represented. The impasse is accentuated by the exploration of what Leonardo da Vinci called the marginal aberrations of perspective, that is, the universe of distortions born in the wake of apparently exact geometric procedures. (...)
The vigorous subjectivity of expressionist roots, explicitly exercised by the painter and printmaker at the beginning of her career, is something that immediately comes to mind for anyone observing her creative process. At the moment when the idea is only a pencil line on paper, she gives free rein to intuition. The shadows are not obtained from calculations. These are only called upon after the formal resolution responds to the intended content, and only to transfer this arbitrary cartography to the plane (drawings, prints, tapestries and cutouts) or to space (objects and installations). The artist destroys and rebuilds the possible gaze upon something before resorting to the ruler and the vanishing points that will objectify for the viewer the image shown and its set of corollary views. (...)
Regina Silveira chose this tool because it meets needs of symbolic articulation, allowing her to manipulate one of the foundations on which the notion of represented reality still rests. Perspective is a fulcrum of the illusory. By exploring contemporary themes with deformations born in the fantastic margins of perspectival rigor, the artist brings together the formal assumptions of Mannerism and the sophisticated framework of ideas set out by conceptual art".

"The Simulacros [Simulacra] (1982-1984), which followed the Anamorfas [Anamorphs], complete the key points of reference of her language. They form a constellation of photographic works, installations and objects, always monochromatic (black on white), reverberating among themselves, which she considers ´a reflection on the representation of cast shadows, realized as a parodic visuality of the projective codes of linear perspective, of the theory of shadows, of photography and of topographic drawing´. In establishing visual structures based on the infringement of the laws of artificial representation created in the search for the exactness of the projective codes of classical perspective, what interested her above all, as it does today, was the use of points of view and angles of vision.
Despite the homogeneity in the making of all her work, devoted to the ambiguities of perspective (and in which the ´motifs´ or objects that serve as her models matter little), we would single out among the Simulacros the installation In Absentia (MD), built in a 10 x 20 m space at the Bienal Internacional de São Paulo in 1983, consisting of the monumental silhouettes of Bottlerack and Bicycle Wheel, stretched in oblique opposition across the floor and up the panels that enclosed the space. They were fictitious shadows that illusorily started from two absolutely empty sculpture bases and became distorted, challenging perception according to the viewer's distance points".

Testimonials

"I have never considered myself a printmaker, because the idea of specializing in a single expressive medium bothers me. Nor am I interested in printmaking in itself. An artist is a specialist in visual languages. Printmaking is just one of the media in which these languages can be exercised. Art History is there to remind us that the great printmakers were also draftsmen and painters. My multimedia stance is based on the possibilities of building something from graphic images of different origins, through the most diverse graphic procedures. I have always used and mixed, without prejudice, silkscreen, offset, heliography, xerox and even traditional techniques such as lithography. Everything that deals with reproducibility interests me, just as the printed image interests me".
