Noemia Mourão (Bragança Paulista SP 1912 - São Paulo SP 1992)
Noemia Mourão was a painter, set designer and draftsman. In 1932, he studied with Di Cavalcanti, with whom he married the following year. Between 1935 and 1940, he lived in Paris, where he attended the Ranson and de la Grande Chaumière academies, in addition to studying philosophy and art history at the Sorbonne. He worked as an illustrator for the newspapers Le Monde and Paris Soir, and was hired by Radio Diffusion Française, to participate in a program on literature and visual arts, alongside Cícero Dias, Tavares Bastos and Marcelino de Carvalho. Upon returning to Brazil, he began to study sculpture with Victor Brecheret.
Criticism
"Noêmia Mourão has been persecuting, for a long time, a way, a communication that is only hers, and it is through her that a branch of Brazilian painting is translated through a process of reunion, poetry, beauty that the artist knows how to convey, without fads (...), without what is vogue today. (...) Noêmia is indifferent to the appeals of the day and continues to be herself in a research, in a meeting of plastic solutions, in a poetry, in a becoming of oneself in which all fads move away, alienate themselves, to leave a noemia alone, without commitments to any school, always faithful to itself".
