José Lourenço (São Paulo SP 1945 - Idem 1997)
José Lourenço was a painter, draftsman and graphic artist. He studied drawing with Nelson Nóbrega at the Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado (Faap) in São Paulo from 1962 to 1965. That same year, he traveled to Bahia, where he produced the series of drawings Lavadeiras [Washerwomen]. From 1965 to 1967, he worked as a layout designer at Editora Abril for the magazines Realidade and Conhecer. In 1987, he was voted painter of the year by students of the Chapel School in São Paulo.
Critiques
"Lourenço has been establishing himself as one of the most gifted painters in São Paulo. He is a realist of the photographic image, which he is able to produce thanks to his unusual skill in representation. In this he coincides with the new photographic realists of the United States, but differs from them in his color, related to that of European Baroque painting. His figures thus acquire a powerful emotional vibrancy".

"Lourenço's light, unique in Brazilian painting of any period, is so fundamental to his subject that, without it, his painting would be just an ordinary photograph. Beautiful and disturbing, but ordinary. Lourenço's social painting is one of the strongest testimonies of our time and, I am absolutely certain, it is what will interest the minds of the next century. The anthropologists, sociologists, scientists, art critics and journalists who succeed us will have the privilege of enjoying so much information turned into Art through an admirable technique that exalts light over deep, sober tones (ochers, browns, earths) which sometimes meet brighter ones (reds, blues, yellows).
