Sílvio oppenheim (São Paulo, July 18 de 1941 - idem, 03 de Abril de 2012)
Silvio Oppenheim was an architect, set designer, designer, engraver and Brazilian painter. Born in São Paulo, between 1941 and 1951, the son of Annelise and Franz Oppenheim, German Jewish immigrants who arrived in Brazil in 1934. He studied at São Paulo Graded School, where he was literate in English and started musical studies with private teachers. He lived with his parents in Vila Mariana, in a cultural environment of European influence.
Between 1951 and 1959, he studied at Colégio Dante Alighieri. Encouraged by the drawing teacher Germana de Angelis, he started to attend the studio of the painter Vicente Mecozzi, in the Acclimação neighborhood, where he learned and practiced his first drawing and painting techniques. Also during high school, he produced early works, including a large panel for the kindergarten, being honored with scholarships for the awards received for his talent.
In 1959, he moved with his family to an apartment in Jardim Paulista and joined the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at the University of São Paulo (FAU-USP), then located at Rua Maranhão, in Higienópolis. The college's cultural environment contributed to its creative maturation. With the encouragement of masters and colleagues such as Flávio Motta, Renina Katz and Julio Katinsky, he developed new drawing and painting techniques.
In 1961, he dedicated himself to learning the woodcut, attending the Atelier by the artist Savério Castellano. He also participated in the Metal Drawing and Engraving courses at Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado (FAAP), taught by recognized plastic artists. He held his first drawings exhibition at the Institute of Architects of Brazil (IAB-SP), receiving praise from Lourival Gomes Machado, then director of FAU-SP. In college, he organized a painting studio and started to work with graphic works, illustrations and scenography.
In 1963, he traveled to Europe for the first time. He graduated as an architect in 1965, starting an internship at the Croce-Aflalo and Gasperini office. Soon after, he was appointed to work with the architect Jacob M. Ruchti, who had a strong influence on his trajectory and encouraged him to follow new artistic guidelines. From this partnership, he developed panels, paintings and collages for different environments.
Between 1968 and 1969, he obtained a scholarship from the German government (DAAD) to study at Technische Universität (TU), in West Berlin, where he kept in touch with local architects and plastic artists, deepening his professional and artistic maturity.
In 1970, he returned to Brazil and began his professional activities. He opened his own architecture office and studio in São Paulo. He joined the architect and dealer César Luiz Pires de Mello, with whom he developed several projects. He participated in the activities of Galeria Cosme Velho and, with the support of César Luiz, he was part of the gallery's collection, exhibiting his work in individual and collective exhibitions.
Between 1975 and 1979, he assumed the chair of interior architecture at the Faculty of Architecture of Mackenzie University. In 1979, he also began to act as a recorder, producing serigraphs and lithographs.
Between 1970 and 1988, he regularly participated in exhibitions in several galleries in Brazil and abroad. He developed architectural projects for residences, offices and stores, and built his own residence in Guarujá, in São Paulo.
Between 1988 and 2002, he moved to Rua Bastos Pereira, where he maintained his new office and studio, producing intensely as an architect and plastic artist. In 2004, a book was released about his work, edited by Banco Santos.
