Sergio Telles (Rio de Janeiro RJ 1936 - 2022)
Sergio Telles was a designer, painter and illustrator. He studied at the hive in mid-1954, in Rio de Janeiro. He held his first solo exhibition in 1955, also in Rio. In 1957, he traveled through Europe and visited the main museums in Italy, France, Holland and Portugal. At the same time, he carried out an internship in the restoration services of the Vatican Pinacoteca. Back in Brazil, he attended the workshops of Rodolfo Chambelland, Oswaldo Teixeira and Marie Nivoulies de Pierrefort, in Rio de Janeiro. In 1964, he joined the diplomatic career.
In the 1970s, he traveled to Porto Seguro, Bahia, at the suggestion of the writer Jorge Amado, and produced drawings and oil paintings, later published in a book with the collaboration of Jorge Amado and Jeanine Warnwood. He is the author of Nivoliès de Pierrefort, published in Buenos Aires by the Museum of Modern Art, in 1974, and an illustrator in Rio de Janeiro, launched at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro, in 1978.
Criticism
"Sergio Telles can be considered a continuator of the fovista tradition: his sensitivity to the chromatic effects and his courageous juxtaposition of contrasts reveal a refined taste, to which the tones predominantly contribute vibrate. His personal contribution to Fovismo lies in the exotic note arising from both his own nature and Brazilian luminosity. This note is ubiquitous in his work, even when he seeks to give a personal version of the gray or bluish skies of Paris. be both fluid and delicate and often brutal and realistic. And this dualism can be observed in a particular way when comparing its small-scale works to the larger ones. The little ones can be seen as an outline, and it is in them that the artist achieves a greater degree of delicacy, tenderness and spontaneity. (...) The analysis of Telles' work, based on his most recent works, reveals that he continues to use the typical light intensity of fovismo, at the same time, however, that he has been reconciling with the brightness, vigor and even the brutality of expressionism. (...)"
