Sergio Telles (Rio de Janeiro RJ 1936 - 2022)
Sergio Telles was a draftsman, painter and illustrator. He studied at the Colmeia in Rio de Janeiro around 1954. He held his first solo exhibition in 1955, also in Rio. In 1957 he traveled through Europe and visited the main museums of Italy, France, the Netherlands and Portugal. At the same time he trained in the restoration department of the Vatican Pinacoteca. Back in Brazil, he attended the studios of Rodolfo Chambelland, Oswaldo Teixeira and Marie Nivouliès de Pierrefort in Rio de Janeiro. In 1964 he joined the diplomatic service.
In the 1970s he traveled to Porto Seguro, in Bahia, at the suggestion of the writer Jorge Amado, and produced drawings and oil paintings, later published in a book with contributions by Jorge Amado and Jeanine Warnwood. He is the author of Nivouliès de Pierrefort, published in Buenos Aires by the Museo de Arte Moderno in 1974, and the illustrator of Rio de Janeiro, launched at the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes in Rio de Janeiro in 1978.

"Sergio Telles can be considered a continuer of the Fauvist tradition: his sensitivity to chromatic effects and his bold juxtaposition of contrasts reveal a refined taste, to which vibrant tones contribute decisively. His personal contribution to Fauvism lies in an exotic note arising both from his own nature and from Brazilian light. This note is ever-present in his work, even when he seeks to give a personal version of the grey or bluish skies of Paris. Telles's paintings can be fluid and delicate as well as, often, brutal and realistic. And this duality can be seen particularly when comparing his small works with the larger ones. The small ones can be regarded as sketches, and it is in them that the artist attains the greatest degree of delicacy, tenderness and spontaneity. (...) An analysis of Telles's work, based on his most recent pieces, shows that he continues to use the luminous intensity typical of Fauvism while reconciling it with the brilliance, vigor and even brutality of Expressionism. (...)"
