Critical Comment
Sandra Cinto begins her trajectory in the 1990s, performing representations of skies and clouds, contained in boxes and cabinets, as in an altarpiece (1995). For the criticism Lisette Lagnado, the artist creates fantastic images, which have an affinity with the work of the Belgian painter René Magritte (1898-1967). In his drawings, which stand out above all for expanding to supports combined in an unpredictable way, stairs, bridges, abysses, chandeliers, lit candles and trees without leaves and fruits are frequent. In them, she reveals admiration for the work of Leonilson (1957-1993).
Sandra Cinto often appropriates photographs, sometimes her childhood or current portraits, which are associated with other objects, such as wooden sculptures that Simulate books or beds. As the art historian Tadeu Chiarelli notes, all these supports or elements form a meeting point and the dissemination of infinite narratives, never completed, and commonly configured as solutions designed for specific spaces. The artist brings to her production the disruption of certain formalist concepts, especially the one focused on the search for the specificities of languages, combining in her work different procedures, such as drawing, sculpture and photography. As Chiarelli also points out, in his production there are works in which dream and reality seem to coexist in silent and contradictory harmony.
Criticism
"When emerging in the São Paulo artistic scene, in the collectives of young artists performed by Sonia Salzstein At the São Paulo Cultural Center, Sandra Cinto surprised, while still in full force of the materic, brutal and chaotic painting, inherited from the 1980s, Sandra presented paintings with clouds of colonial blue candids, made with very light layers of paint. Ingenuity or boldness did the paintings also show an admiration for Magritte, returning to surrealism in the 1990s? Displayed by her on the same occasion, objects in the form of models demonstrated the efficient use of contemporary languages, denoting information and expressive power. Pure boldness, therefore.
These objects, made from two small environments connected by a door, signaled the same poetics as the canvas: while the clouds, painted like unveiled tunnels, pointed the path of transcendence, the model door was a metaphor From the passage to infinity, path between a floor of pigments and the immaterial signaled by the smell of camphor or ether. Afterwards, Sandra began to paint the clouds red, turning the key to reading her work to the perception of the body, viscera and blood. 'Who was born from the mid-1960s onwards is the post-AIDS generation and that weighs heavily', says the artist. 'Most of us began to have a sexual life with this threat, pleasure and seduction that do not go all the way through panic; We have truncated freedom.´ The artistic affiliations are several, articulated in a harmonious way to solidify a personal path. One of the most evident nowadays lies in its construction of plans, which refers to the delicate landscapes of Guignard - 'The most difficult thing is to do the simple and that's what I admire most about it', reveals". Angélica de Moraes, Sandra Cinto creates art with the pain of the world. The State of S. Paulo, s.d.
"Sandra Cinto erupted in the contemporary landscape with an anachronistic representation of the celestial space, serene colors and nocturnal atmospheres. At first it seemed to claim a place for a complacent painting of the world. But the enormous meekness of the paintings, paradoxically to their humble character, was imposed as an unavoidable force. Gradually, the tone was declining from the blues and grays, and the untimely blushing of the clouds could well allude to the waves of a raging ocean, an index of fear in the face of the incommensurability of nature - a topic discussed most recently in its installation for the chapel of the Morumbi, transformed into a large allegorical vessel equipped with white candles with an upside down.1 With this deviation, the artist gains complexity by suggesting that the unlimited space is not only outside the subject. Sandra Cinto directs her gaze to the metaphor of the inner sky of remission, giving her the body that she lacked in the two-dimensional plane. Then, in a presumed reflux, the skies begin to fit inside small boxes (unlocked), cabinets (opened) or new and clear wood altarpieces - all furniture that evokes (blocked) roads from one dimension to another, access only possible at Fantastic imagination. The artist will resort to the dreamlike style of Magritte, no longer to extract her poetic riddles, but in search of the symbolic value of the image: the cage, lamps lit in broad daylight, a strawberry or an apple in the firmament of the history of art. The sensual (and feminine) configuration of the fruit - exuberant and disproportionate - shines such a 'astro' in the center of its skies. Consistent with the vocabulary of the sublime, Sandra Cinto assimilates the light in her sculptures.2 From that moment on, the work would lead to a freer investigation. A carved with a fine and careful line draws forests populated with long lines, stairs, trunks, tears, clouds, seagulls, chandeliers and lit candles. The ethereal, which emanated from the thin and blurred matter of the metaphysical heavens, takes on a palpable aspect with the incrustation, at the height of the abdomen of the wall, of a flute modified and molten in bronze, at the same time affirmative and 'sweet' (in the literal and figurative sense).3 The cult of suspended forms has, right angle, the tension necessary to face the almost dissolution of the lines".
