Gilberto Salvador (São Paulo SP 1946)
Gilberto Salvador is a painter, draftsman, engraver, architect and teacher. He graduated in Architecture in 1969 from the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of São Paulo (FAU/USP), where he later began to act as a professor. In parallel with his academic training, he dedicated himself to painting and drawing. He held his first solo exhibition in 1965, at the Art Gallery of Teatro de Arena, in São Paulo. He was awarded the gold medal at the Salão de Arte Contemporânea de Campinas, in 1967, and received the Acquisition Award in the 1969 and 1970 editions. He participated in several editions of the São Paulo International Biennial and, among his main individual exhibitions, Two exhibitions at MASP stand out, in 1985 and 1995.
In 1999, the Xangô Flight sculpture was installed at the Jardim São Paulo station of the São Paulo Metropolitan Companhia (Metro). His work is marked by the opposition between the gestural and the rigid trait, between organic and inorganic forms, between movement and static. In it, living forms — such as human figures, flowers and animals — dialogue with geometric structures. Art critic Jacob Klintowitz published two books about his production: Natural History of Man According to Gilberto Salvador, in 1985, and Gilberto Salvador: The Inner Kingdom, in 2001.

"When it starts His career, in 1964, Gilberto Salvador makes a painting that tends towards formal synthesis and denotes social concerns. The following year his painting becomes expressionist and the artist deepens his reflection in the political sense. ART appears in his works. When, in 1969, he enters the university, he produces objects with stainless steel plates and uses the computer to generate images, in which the organic and inorganic element maintain a particular dialogue, under the aegis of an increasingly rigorous formalism. 1976 becomes interested in the sequential record of moving animals and the serialization of landscape elements and then works with indigenous iconography and the figure of the lion, taken as a symbol of power. Then the birds of prey appear and their painting raises a powerful and at the same time poetic flight towards the color highlands. The dark flights, the green flights, the reflex flights, the purple sounds, the colorful dives, the blue gestures appear. Gesture painting becomes one of the artist's most striking characteristics and color plays a decisive role in his plastic speech."

"The art of Gilberto Salvador is made up of oppositions. It is the dialogue between apparently opposite and irreconcilable elements that gives their work a permanent sense of expectation and emotion. In this case, the painting is made from tenuous links between contradictory situations compatible in a detailed visual study. The artist would invent the image of the animal, the image of wildlife, the indigenous heritage, the confrontation between the organic and the inorganic. Its palette has two distinct movements, as it is cold and calculating in the organization of delicate backgrounds and rigid geometries, and hot and lyrical in the gestural and in the interference it creates for the structures that he himself invented. The artist moves between these poles and builds his work on this blade, oscillating between different natures. Gilberto Salvador loves the danger and the adventure of visual creation, and his painting is illuminated in the discoveries of unexpected formal relations."

"Architect, university professor, lecturer, Gilberto Salvador stood out for his restless spirit, for his formal innovation and for a singular daring to put the aesthetic questions based on in a solid knowledge of social and planetary issues. In this way, very young, he carried out a series of works using icons of mass society, coming from comic books and commercial communication, in the spirit of pop art, with a pop art appearance, but of a manifestly critical character, which caused a stir for its political and formal content.
After this impactful beginning, the artist advanced in the areas of painting and engraving, carrying out a deep reflection on environmental issues, being one of the Brazilian pioneers in the search for planetary consciousness and in the understanding of our world as a living being and interdependent inhabitants".
