Antonio Peticov (Assis SP 1946)
Antonio Peticov is a draftsman, printmaker, sculptor and painter with a diverse artistic production. His work encompasses painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture and illustration. His most notable installations include Balli Ballet (1982), at Cloudwalk Farm in Connecticut, and The Big Ladder - Scala Cromatica (1983), presented at the New York Art Expo in the United States. In 1989 he presented the Projeto Natura - Rio Pinheiros [Natura Project - Pinheiros River] at the 20th Bienal Internacional de São Paulo, proposing the planting of various tree species along the Pinheiros River in São Paulo. In 1992 he created the Projeto Bosque Natura [Natura Grove Project] for the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro.
In 1990 he created the mural Momento Antropofágico com Oswald de Andrade [Anthropophagic Moment with Oswald de Andrade], installed in the República station of the São Paulo Metro, in tribute to the writer's centenary. In 2003 the book Trabalhos Escolhidos [Selected Works] was published, accompanied by an exhibition at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand (MASP). In his paintings Peticov often explores thematic series such as Seção Áurea [Golden Section] and Dia e Noite [Day and Night], using concepts from physics and mathematics related to the color spectrum and light.
Critical Commentary
Self-taught, Antonio Peticov studied art history and the avant-garde movements in the second half of the 1960s. He works with painting, sculpture and installations, with a diverse production. His pictures stand out for their luminous effects and the use of intense colors. In them he creates dreamlike images aligned with the imagery of advertising.
In 1990 he created the mural Momento Antropofágico com Oswald de Andrade, in tribute to the writer's centenary, installed in the República station of the São Paulo Metro. A viewer standing directly in front of the mural sees undulating forms in its central part. Moving to a 45-degree angle, one begins to perceive a face in these forms. The artist uses anamorphosis1 and explores oppositions such as positive and negative, horizontal and vertical. Peticov frequently uses concepts from mathematics and physics, related to the color spectrum and light, creating works of a symbolic nature.

"The author of a varied body of work with diverse techniques, combining several tendencies of contemporary art, his work belongs to the production that emerged in the 1960s, amid the avant-garde renewals brought by international movements such as Surrealism, graphism, Dadaism, Pop Art and the free research of so-called experimental art. His incursion into these and other aesthetic proposals of our time is quite evident in his painting, in which geometric, surreal and abstracting elements are combined with a highly satisfactory visual result and at times surprising effects".
