Tadashi Kaminagai (Hiroshima, Japan 1899 - Paris, France 1982)
Tadashi Kaminagai was a painter, draftsman, moldurer and teacher. At the family's initiative, he joined the age of 14 in a Buddhist monastery in the Japanese city of Kobe. Two years later, he traveled to the Dutch West Indies, current Indonesia, where he worked as a missionary and farmer until 1927. That year, he decided to pursue an artistic career and moved to Paris, where he met the artist Tsugouharu Foujita. (1886–1968), who guided him in the painting. In parallel with the artistic activity, he worked as a moldurer.
In the early 1930s, he exhibited his paintings in the Parisian salons and, in 1938, returned to Japan. In 1939, after the outbreak of the World War (1939–1945), embarked for Brazil, bringing with it a letter of recommendation addressed to Candido Portinari (1903–1962). He settled in Rio de Janeiro and, in 1941, installed a workshop and a photo shop in the Santa Teresa neighborhood, where he worked and worked as a teacher for several Brazilian artists and Japanese-Brazilian artists, such as Inimá de Paula (1918–1999), Flavio-Shiro (1928) and Tikashi Fukushima (1920–2001), among others.
His first solo exhibition, held around 1945, was organized by Portinari And it happened at the Hotel Serrador, in Rio de Janeiro. In 1947, he joined the Seibi group. He returned to Japan in 1954 and, three years later, returned to settle in Paris. He lived between Japan, France and Brazil until his death in 1982.
