Biography

Renina Katz (Rio de Janeiro 1925, São Paulo, 2025)

Renina Katz was a prominent Brazilian artist, whose performance was extended as a record company, draftsman, illustrator and teacher. His artistic training began between 1947 and 1950 at the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes, in Rio de Janeiro, where he had important names such as Henrique Cavalleiro and Quirino Campofiorito. In addition, he graduated in Drawing from the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Brazil. His trajectory in the graphic arts began in 1946, with studies in woodcut under the guidance of Axl Leskoschek. Later, encouraged by Poty, he joined the Metal Engraving Course with Carlos Oswald, at the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios in Rio de Janeiro. He taught engraving at renowned institutions such as the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP) and the Armando Álvares Penteado Foundation (FAAP), acting as an educator until the 1960s. Entitled Favela, a work that marked its commitment to the representation of the Brazilian urban and social reality through art.

From that period, it began its academic trajectory at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of São Paulo (FAU/USP), where it taught for 28 years. In this space, he also developed his intellectual production, presenting master's and doctoral theses that dialogued with his practical and theoretical experience in the field of visual arts.

The work of Renina Katz is marked by the refined technique, by the formal rigor and by the attentive look at Social and urban issues, characteristics that made it a reference in Brazilian engraving. Throughout his career, he influenced generations of artists and architects.

Critical Comment

At the beginning of his career, Renina Katz dedicates herself to painting and performs portraits and landscapes of Rio de Janeiro. In the 1950s, his work denoted social concerns with a character of denunciation. It reveals the universe of urban workers and marginalized characters, as in the various engravings that deal with the theme of migrants (1948/1956) or in the album Favelas, 1956. His woodcuts have a realistic character, a direct and Conciseness of formal elements and have great technical refinement, being compared, by some critics, with the production of the German label Käthe Kollwitz (1867 - 1945). The emotion is graphically expressed in the strong opposition between the blacks and whites that gives the scenes the dramatic aspect, as in retreatants, s.d.

Renina Katz leaves themes linked to social realism from the mid-1990s 1950, when his work gradually acquires a non-figurative character, although the relationship with the landscape remains in it. The artist starts to emphasize, more and more, the game of transparencies in her works. Starts production in lithogravure in the 1970s. Most of its engravings are suggestions for landscapes, conceived as places of memory. In the opinion of critic Roberto Pontual, when his engravings lean towards the lyrical character, Katz approaches the transparent and musical atmosphere of the works of Fayga Ostrower (1920 - 2001). of the representation of the urban landscape, also as a place of memory, inspired by the poem by Carlos Drummond de Andrade (1902 - 1987) entitled Landscape: How it is done. She states that "color arose as a necessity in the evolution of the work, and the multiplication of the matrices brought the possibility of exploring the various tonal values". Get a single engraving. In later works, such as Cosmos 2, 1992, or Limit 2, 1993, the subtle luminosity and the surprising use of color stand out.

Testimonies

"By the 1950s, as I was a post-war generation, the libertarian generation of the war against fascism, adhered to the so-called social realism aspect or socialist. I worked on what could be considered proselytizing: the series of favelas, the migrants, the landless peasants, the boys from the hill, etc... (...) sketches was made at the station in the North, in São Paulo (...) on Saturdays and Sundays I would go there and draw a lot. (...)
This period ended, and, for a number of reasons, it sold out. I changed, I was very young, my historical perspective has changed also, and that influenced my work. It was a complicated passage. (...) I started to look outside, I started to make landscapes, also to discover the urban landscape and, little by little, the work was transformed. My work, which everyone thinks is very abstract. Abstract, because there is always a reference of the surroundings, of the landscape... (...)
I made many silkscreen prints, in addition to the master's thesis (...) The tape recorders said they made a print and not engraving (...) I also continue to make metal prints. These are works that don't circulate much".
Renina Katz A Laurita Salles - June 1993
Renaissance from Renina Katz to Laurita Salles. Jun. 1993. p. 8, 10-11, 14-15.

"I started with the discovery of Japanese recorders, still a painting student at the National School of Fine Arts, in Rio de Janeiro... Japanese prints and I was fascinated... I then started looking for the engravings... Frans Masereel, who was a Belgian expressionist, Käthe Kollwitz, Munch, etc. (...) At that time there was an Austrian artist in Rio who taught classes, called Axl Leskoschek, and he was an excellent woodcutter... He was a teacher who conveyed such a passion for the woodcut that ended up contaminating everyone. (...) I began to think that the woodcut, at that moment, was the appropriate language for my artistic project: I was in a phase of a lot of political engagement, of denunciation..., in short, all those juvenile outbreaks and I thought that the woodcut, because of the cuts, from the incisions... (I worked in black-and-white, without any color), I would give myself what I needed.
There was Goeldi, which was a magnificent example, there was Lívio Abramo, Segall, there was Munch... recorders that pointed to a path in which I could obtain artistic results that were part of my project... and then I was totally enchanted..., I went to see the Mexicans, I went to see Posada, Leopoldo Mendez, who was an excellent recorder and founded the Taller of Graphic Arts of Mexico, which made a rescue of the popular engraving along the lines of the pose, of the times of the revolution... So with this set of information I went body and soul, and I was doing practically only drawing and woodcutting, with a few small incursions into the metal engraving, of 1948 until 1956... In 1956 it gave me a kind of crisis: I thought that my engraving was becoming an extreme elaboration, in a formal refinement, and that she was losing the force of conviction of the message I wanted to give... Because it was an engraving very committed to the messages... (...) and then I changed the course, starting with something else, which I still didn't define well what it was, in which I could transmit other messages... And all this was also involved with my militancy: in 1956 I already He was not a young militant..."
