Renina Katz (Rio de Janeiro RJ 1925 - São Paulo SP 2025)
Renina Katz was a leading Brazilian artist whose work spanned printmaking, drawing, illustration and teaching. Her artistic training began between 1947 and 1950 at the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes, in Rio de Janeiro, where her teachers included important names such as Henrique Cavalleiro and Quirino Campofiorito. She also earned a teaching degree in drawing from the Faculdade de Filosofia of the Universidade do Brasil. Her path in the graphic arts began as early as 1946, with woodcut studies under Axl Leskoschek. Later, encouraged by Poty, she joined Carlos Oswald's intaglio printmaking course at the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios do Rio de Janeiro.
In 1951, she moved to São Paulo, the city where she would consolidate her artistic and teaching career. She taught printmaking at renowned institutions such as the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP) and the Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado (FAAP), working as an educator until the 1960s. In 1956, she released her first print album, titled Favela, a work that marked her commitment to representing Brazil's urban and social reality through art.
From that period on, she began her academic career at the Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da Universidade de São Paulo (FAU/USP), where she taught for 28 years. There she also developed her intellectual work, presenting master's and doctoral theses that engaged with her practical and theoretical experience in the visual arts.
Renina Katz's work is marked by refined technique, formal rigor and an attentive eye on social and urban issues, qualities that made her a reference in Brazilian printmaking. Throughout her career, she influenced generations of artists and architects.
Critical Commentary
Early in her career, Renina Katz devotes herself to painting and makes portraits and landscapes of Rio de Janeiro. In the 1950s her work shows social concerns with a character of denunciation. It reveals the world of urban workers and marginalized figures, as in the many prints on the theme of the retirantes [drought migrants] (1948/1956) or in the album Favelas, 1956. Her woodcuts have a realist character, a direct message and great concision of formal elements, as well as great technical refinement, and some critics have compared them with the work of the German printmaker Käthe Kollwitz (1867 - 1945). Emotion is expressed graphically in the forceful opposition between blacks and whites that gives the scenes their dramatic quality, as in Retirantes, n.d.
Renina Katz leaves the themes linked to social realism from the mid-1950s, when her work gradually takes on a non-figurative character, although a relationship with landscape remains. The artist increasingly emphasizes the play of transparencies in her works. She begins producing lithographs in the 1970s. Most of her prints are suggestions of landscapes, conceived as places of memory. In the opinion of the critic Roberto Pontual, when her prints lean toward the lyrical, Katz comes close to the transparent, musical atmosphere of the works of Fayga Ostrower (1920 - 2001).
In the series Lugares [Places], 1981, the printmaker starts from the representation of the urban landscape, also as a place of memory, inspired by Carlos Drummond de Andrade's (1902 - 1987) poem titled Paisagem: Como Se Faz [Landscape: How It Is Made]. She states that "color arose as a necessity in the development of the work, and the multiplication of matrices brought the possibility of exploring the various tonal values".1 To obtain the translucent surfaces typical of her works, Renina Katz engraves many matrices and applies several colors, making numerous printings to obtain a single print. In later works, such as Cosmos 2, 1992, or Limite 2 [Limit 2], 1993, the subtle luminosity and surprising use of color stand out.

"Back in the fifty-something years, since I belonged to a postwar generation, the liberating generation of the war against fascism, I joined the current of so-called social or socialist realism. I worked on what could be considered proselytism: the series of favelas, of retirantes, of landless peasants, of the boys from the hillside slums, etc... (...) I would go to the places and work d'après nature. Of the retirantes series, a good part of the sketches was made at the Estação do Norte, in São Paulo (...) on Saturdays and Sundays I would go there and draw a great deal. (...)
That period ended and, for a number of reasons, it exhausted itself. I changed, I was very young, my historical perspective changed as well, and that influenced my work. It was a complicated transition. (...) I began to look outward, I started making landscapes, also discovering the urban landscape, and little by little the work was transformed. My work, which everyone thinks is very abstract... is relatively abstract, because it always has a reference to the surroundings, to the landscape... (...)
I made many screen prints, besides my master's thesis (...) When I began to devote myself regularly to lithography, I was much criticized. Printmakers said I was making prints, not engravings (...) I also still make metal prints. They are works that don't circulate much".

"I began with the discovery of the Japanese printmakers, while still a painting student at the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes, in Rio de Janeiro... I saw some Japanese prints and was fascinated... So I began looking for prints... Frans Masereel, who was a Belgian expressionist, Käthe Kollwitz, Munch, etc. (...) At that time there was an Austrian artist in Rio who taught classes, named Axl Leskoschek, and he was an excellent wood engraver... He was a teacher who conveyed such a passion for woodcut that he ended up infecting everyone. (...) I began to feel that woodcut, at that moment, was the right language for my artistic project: I was in a phase of strong political engagement, of denunciation..., in short, all those youthful outbursts, and I thought that woodcut, because of the cuts, the incisions... (I worked in black and white, with no color at all), would give me what I needed.
There was Goeldi, who was a magnificent example, there was Lívio Abramo, Segall, there was Munch..., in short, a group of printmakers who pointed to a path in which I could achieve artistic results that were part of my project... And then I was completely enchanted..., I went to look at the Mexicans, at Posada, at Leopoldo Mendez, who was an excellent printmaker and founded the Taller de Artes Graficas of Mexico, which revived popular printmaking along the lines of Posada, from the days of the revolution... So with all this information I threw myself in body and soul, and did practically nothing but drawing and woodcut, with a few small forays into intaglio, from 1948 to 1956... In 1956 I went through a kind of crisis: I felt my printmaking was becoming extremely elaborate, formally refined, and was losing the persuasive force of the message I wanted to convey... Because it was printmaking very committed to messages... (...) And then I changed course, heading toward something else, which I still couldn't quite define, in which I could convey other messages... And all this was also tied up with my activism: by 1956 I was no longer a young activist..."
