Maria Bonomi (Meina, Itália 1935)
Maria Bonomi is an artist who works as a printmaker, sculptor, painter, muralist, curator, costume designer, set designer and teacher. A naturalized Brazilian after arriving in the country in 1946, she settled in São Paulo, where she began her art studies. In 1951, Bonomi studied painting and drawing with Yolanda Mohalyi, and two years later, in 1953, she continued her training with the painter Karl Plattner. The following year, she began to delve into printmaking with the renowned Lívio Abramo. Her artistic career gained prominence with her first solo exhibition in São Paulo in 1956 and with a scholarship from the Ingram-Merrill Foundation, which took her to study at the Pratt Institute Graphics Center in New York. During that period, she also studied printmaking with Hans Müller and art theory with Meyer Schapiro at Columbia University.
On returning to Brazil, Maria Bonomi continued her artistic development, attending Johnny Friedlaender's metal engraving workshop at the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro (MAM/RJ) in 1959. The following year, she founded Estúdio Gravura in São Paulo together with Lívio Abramo, where she worked as his assistant until 1964. During the 1970s, she broadened her artistic horizons by also devoting herself to sculpture, creating important large-scale panels for public spaces. Drawing on her experience as an artist and teacher, Bonomi also made a significant contribution to the academic field, defending in 1999 her doctoral thesis entitled "Arte Pública. Sistema Expressivo/Anterioridade" [Public Art. Expressive System/Anteriority] at the Escola de Comunicações e Artes da Universidade de São Paulo (ECA/USP).
Her work spans a wide range of expressions, always with a keen eye on Brazil's social and cultural issues. Maria Bonomi has stood out not only as a creator but also as an important educator and curator, with a legacy that runs through both the visual arts and theoretical reflection on public art and its place in society.
Critical Commentary
For Maria Bonomi, working with woodcut is an experience that offers unlimited possibilities for artistic creation. When exhibiting at the 5th Paris Biennial in 1967, where she received the first prize, she fought for prints to be displayed on walls rather than in display cases or vitrines, like pages of books, as was usual at the time. This changed the public's relationship with printmaking, as well as the artist's in the practice of engraving.
The printmaker always deals with issues related to the matrix and the printed image: when working wood or metal, the mark is different from the one obtained on paper. The matrices bear the marks of the artist's relationship with the material, of the impulse and gestures that create the work. For the printmaker Renina Katz (1926), Maria Bonomi reveals in her works some of these fascinating games of the universe of printmaking. In 1972, she presented the Solombras, transparent and colored, molded in polyester from wooden matrices. In 1976, she made the Epigramas [Epigrams], works cast in metal from clay pieces in which she produces lines and grooves, exploring solids and voids and revealing the essence of the printmaker's gesture.
Throughout her career, the artist has insisted on large print runs, which allow the works to reach as many people as possible; to this end she also uses lithography. She innovated by producing in large formats (some works more than two meters wide), showing a desire to give prints greater vigor and aesthetic impact. Another important aspect of her work is the use of color in varied and unexpected tones.
In addition to prints, the artist continues to produce reliefs in concrete or metal, placed in various public spaces in São Paulo, such as the Igreja Mãe do Salvador, the Palácio dos Bandeirantes and the Jardim São Paulo metro station. In these murals, Maria Bonomi draws on her experience as a printmaker, exploring the graphic quality of woodcut grooves. Textures and gesture are transferred to concrete or metal. Questioning the myth of the unique piece, the artist also develops clothing projects (T-shirts, ties, scarves).
Maria Bonomi is an important presence on the Brazilian printmaking scene. In the words of Lívio Abramo: "Vitality, vehemence, passion and formal boldness are the characteristics of the graphic work of this artist, who has been able to convey to her prints the passion of her feelings and the dense expressiveness of formal synthesis".1

Critiques
"Ornament, a manifestation of composition as rhythm, exposes the artistic emotion in Maria Bonomi. In her research, monumental compositions are conceived, memorials of the groove, which becomes perennial. For it is not the figure that matters, but the rhythmic directions the grooves build. Retaining from Lívio Abramo the maxim that the mark left by each tool is a language, Maria Bonomi develops the rhythmic play of the line-groove, which is light, pulsating light, light that builds. Her very first prints show her interested in the groove, but also in use: at a Paris biennial in the 1960s, she insisted on exhibiting prints on the wall, the place of painting, thereby contradicting the practice of display on tables. Thinking about use, Maria Bonomi questions printmaking as to dimension; however, her rhythmic-geometric composition discusses scale rather than dimension, since, even in prints in small formats, the composition throws the gaze beyond the support.
The groove is the invasion of matter, made palpable by the resistance the printmaker encounters in it and overcomes. It is here that the emotion of printmaking is best grasped: in the grooves, Maria Bonomi declares her emotion of engraving, the matrix being the essence of the printmaker's work, and the print no more than a derivative of the primary action. The matrix can be built in wood as well as in clay or another material. In turn, the matrix can be transferred to the most diverse supports, such as paper, aluminum, polyester and concrete. Going from the table to the wall, and from the wall to the concrete panel, implies use, realized as the socialization of the work, aimed at the passerby. Like those of the woodcuts, the grooves of the matrices reproduced in concrete are intended for a hotel lobby. With slats and ropes, Maria Bonomi builds the grooves of Construção de São Paulo, a print-relief erected in one of the city's metro stations".

"One day I walked into an exhibition by Lívio Abramo... It was a revelatory, magical event... I walked into his exhibition and was extremely impressed by it. It was a revelation of that light, that intimacy, those small planes... They were small surfaces of enormous importance... It was as if you were entering infinite landscapes... It was at once enormous and tiny, something of transformation, of magic... I went crazy and went to look for him, to ask to work with him. He said he wasn't giving lessons, that he didn't teach and... , anyway, I started insisting... In the end he told me to show up at his house once a week, and I began going there a lot. (...) Little by little I began these forms, making large boards with plants, with flowers... That was around 1956, when he invited me to an exhibition. (...) At that point things began to move, I was beginning to manage a bit on my own, ending up with a scholarship in New York, at the Pratt Institute, where I worked with a Chinese artist, Seong Moy, and at Columbia University, in a printmaking course with Professor Hans Müller (...) It was this Chinese artist who led me to color, to playing with the possibilities of printing and paper, giving them another value... My image began to grow larger and I managed to work with it as pure language... But it was still Lívio's teaching, his tools (...).
When I returned to Brazil in 1960, Lívio was setting up Estúdio Gravura and immediately called me to work as his assistant. That was six years after I had gone looking for him... In 1964 he left (...).
If you consider that the groove can go onto any support... , paper is not the end either. The print expresses only part of the emotion of printmaking, which is the matrix (...) The same matrix can be printed, it can be transferred to polyester, it can be transferred to concrete... It can be transferred to any support that reproduces the emotion... Because it's not only the white, it's the groove. (...)
Sculpture had come off the pedestal, painting had come off the easel... But prints had to stay on the table!... That was a big fight of mine. (...) And there's the problem of managing to keep the rigor, the spirit of printmaking, in the cut, in the incision, in the emotion... , because otherwise you just start making gigantism... That was my great concern: being able to create for the wall. (...) From the wall I went on to concrete panels because of the social meaning of distribution. Because if I can have a concrete wall on Avenida Paulista, or anywhere else, in a collective space... , I can make many more people sensitive to the groove than if I were simply making a little print..."
