Biography

Luiz Zerbini (São Paulo SP 1959)

Mulmedia artist.

At four years old, Luiz Pierre Zerbini begins to take painting classes with Van Acker (1931 - 2000). Later he studies photography with Carlos Moreira (1937) and Aquarela with Dudi Maia Rosa (1946). Between 1978 and 1980, he attended the Fine Arts course at Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado (FAAP), in São Paulo. At the beginning of the 1980s, he moved to Rio de Janeiro, started working as a set designer for the theater group Asdrúbal, he brought the trombone and performed in Rio's bars in partnership with the actress Regina Casé (1954). He has his first solo exhibition in 1982, at Casa do Brasil, in Madrid, Spain. It occupies part of the National Salon of Visual Arts in Rio de Janeiro and receives a special reference from the jury, in 1985. Participates in the 19th International Biennial of São Paulo, in 1987. paintings, but later works with sculpture, video, drawing and photography. In 1995, he received the Grand Prix of Critics in the Visual Arts category of the São Paulo Association of Art Critics (APCA). That same year, he created, in partnership with the artist Barrão (1959), the video and film editor Sérgio Mekler (1963) and the music producer Chico Neves the group Chelpa Ferro (Arcaica Expression that Means Money), which works with sculpture, technological installations and music electronics.

Critical Comment

In the 1980s, Luiz Zerbini produces figurative canvases in which he presents scenes of surrealist inspiration, as tragedy is an accumulation of misunderstandings, 1987. Artist often uses photography in collages, designed as studies for large canvas. He also uses the photographic framework in works such as Zoo, 1985, in which he also maintains a dialogue with pop art. In the children's pool, from the same date, the dreamlike aspect and the extremely vibrant and luminous colors stand out. Subsequently, he performs self-portraits in which he presents himself wrapped in a profusion of colors and images.

In 1995, Zerbini meets the artist Barrão (1959), the image editor Sergio Mekler (1963) and the Music producer Chico Neves and creates the group Chelpa Ferro, which associates image and sound, performing performances and installations. The group explores electronic and industrial sounds, creates new uses and meanings for old electronic equipment and also uses noises resulting from everyday objects, such as those of printers, cash registers, ping-pong balls or the steps of the exhibition visitors. In an installation presented by the group at the 26th Bienal Internacional de São Paulo, in 2004, a set of branches and dry tree trunks is moved by means of electric pedals, driven by the public, and produces a light sound, similar to the sound of the wind traveling through the interior. of the building.

In works exhibited in 1999, such as the Paintings in the Water series, Luiz Zerbini uses a Chinese technique in which the paper is dyed underwater, with a solution of paint and algae. With this procedure, the artist produces abstract paintings of luminous colors that reflect the fluidity of the aqueous medium. As the artist Sérgio Romagnolo (1957) notes, at first glance, these paintings appear to be easy and seductive, but they bring with them issues related to popular and conceptual art.

Criticism

"The trapezoid It rips the air to the sound of a blind violin. It's a goal. The line explodes on the screen, a crash on the ground. It's a circus. The ball crosses the area, the ace kills in the chest and kicks. It's art. It subverts any position of meaning. Only sensations populate the head of this eleven. Cultural workers. No excessive feeling but the color and vigor of the ink. Nice, very crazy. Our team takes off towards Mexico. On the treadmill, the panic panel of the saturated megalopolises. By the way, a goal from this team values any pinacoteca".
