Lucy Citti Ferreira (São Paulo SP 1911 - Paris, France 2008)
Lucy Citti Ferreira was a painter, draftsman, record company and teacher. He lived part of his childhood and adolescence in Italy and France, experiences that significantly influenced his artistic training. He began his studies in 1930 with the French painter André Chapuy, in the city of Le Havre. Between 1932 and 1934, he attended the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, in Paris, a period in which he also participated in the Tuileries Hall.
He returned to Brazil in 1934. And, the following year, he met the painter Lasar Segall, with whom he started to study and for whom he also posed as a model. In 1935, he received an honorable mention at the São Paulo Salon of Fine Arts and participated in the 2nd Salon in May. In 1938, he held his first solo exhibitions at the Instituto dos Arquitetos do Brasil, in São Paulo, and at the Brazilian Press Association, in Rio de Janeiro. Bouchet et Jack, expanding his performance in the European artistic circuit. In 1954, he presented an individual exhibition at the São Paulo Museum of Art of São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand (MASP), consolidating his trajectory in the national artistic scene.
In 1988, the Lasar Segall Museum organized the exhibition "Sombras and Lights", bringing together works produced by Lucy Citti Ferreira after her return to Europe, highlighting the expressive and sensitive strength of her work. Throughout his career, he remained faithful to aesthetic research, with an emphasis on the mastery of drawing and the subtlety of light in his compositions.
Critical commentary
Born in São Paulo, the painter Lucy Citti Ferreira spends her childhood between Genoa and Paris, where he attends the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. He returned with his family to Brazil in 1935, when, through the writer and critic Mário de Andrade (1893-1945), he came into contact with the painter Lasar Segall, from whom he became a student and also a model for a sequence of portraits. This contact deeply marks its production of the period; His work is close to that of Segall, both in the formal aspect and in relation to the theme, which makes it much criticized and finds little receptivity in the artistic milieu in its time. As the critic Geraldo Ferraz points out (1905-1979), the attentive observer actually perceives many affinities between the work of Lucy Citti Ferreira and that of Segall, but also notes that the artist's production presents a exquisite gradation in the use of color, very Controlled, while the painter explores the vibration obtained by the various nuances, she makes use of tonalizations and seeks another type of atmosphere in her works. In general, its production from the 1930s and 1940s remains forgotten in Brazil and rarely appears in exhibition catalogues. As noted by art historian Vera d'Horta, in France the painter starts to produce almost abstract landscapes, in which she reveals an introspective character. In 1988, he held an exhibition in São Paulo, with works produced since the 1960s and gathered in two series - Landscapes of Remembrance and Memory. In some landscapes, sinuous forms predominate, such as on the hill at nightfall (1970s). Already in works in the Memory series, the compositions gain verticality, and the artist explores luminosity and transparency, evoking forests or even interiors of churches.
Criticism
"Lucy certainly has a painter's temperament, such as It is carried out in the works that it has now reached, through the very tenth and conscious acquisition of a painting technique in which we will find both the design and the composition, the appropriate color, a sense of the form, a meticulous care in the choice of the real data, and unlike a research in the exclusive pictorial plane, a penetration audacious and throbbing in the vital essence of the thematically formulated plastic object. The prestige of Lasar Segall's painting - the most solid artistic expression that unfolded in the country this century, although its European origins - could not fail to influence, in the Formation of the present Plastic Expression by Lucy Citti Ferreira There is no harm in this influence, nor will it be possible to deny it or try to limit it. with his short experience of the French school".

"In France, gradually, Lucy went from the interpretation of the figurative human to the landscape. The visible and its rhythms that, according to her, owed much in their sensitivity to the presence of the wind that it captures in some works, in the same way that in the landscape many whites are surfaces of snow that remain in the terrain, in which the greatness of silence is intrinsic to nature itself. Recents may appear strong blues, which she treats among the light spots that both mark her lyrical nature, at this stage of landscape designer. These recent oils are already walking, such as rhythm and agglutination of shapes, to an almost watercolor aesthetic dimension. In several of them, the sensitivity De Lucy interprets a kind of dilution of forms, even when they maintain a more solid central core."
