Biography

Ivan Freitas (João Pessoa PB 1932 - Rio de Janeiro RJ 2006)

Ivan Freitas was a painter and muralist. He began his artistic activity as a self-taught, in João Pessoa, where he held his first individual exhibition at the Public Library, in 1957. In 1962, he traveled to Paris as a scholarship holder for the Maison de France. The following year, he returned to Brazil and presented the exhibition Ivan Freitas: Paris 1963, at Galeria Barcinski, in Rio de Janeiro. In 1968, the magazine Galeria de Arte Moderna (GAM) published an article entitled Ivan Freitas and the Cosmic Space. Between 1969 and 1972, he was in New York, commissioned by the International Telephone and Telegraph Corporation. Back in Brazil, he participated, in 1984, in the first Arte nos Muros project, painting a mural on the external wall of the National School of Music, in Rio de Janeiro. of the orderly image linked by a severe commitment of style and in the harmony between traits and colors, clearly expressed in terms of 'concentrated poetry'... Young Freitas refuses the chance of the material effect and automatic gesture. Controls and dominates each part of the painting with a desire to deepen the image. that surprises and enchants. It is a strange fascination that adjoins the mystery. Nature is mixed with the history of an ancient time, revived through the centuries. Colorful that adds an agitated fascination to the elegance of those secret structures. Freitas defines the enigmas. ´ And it's fair. The beautiful and confident rational constructions of humanism are replaced by the enigmatic adventures of the spirit. (...) Today the young Brazilian arrives to remake us, in his own way, the speech of Klee, with a security that haunts, with a rare ease of research that brings him to origins, unknown to us and that we feel common, strangely close".

CAVALCANTI, Carlos (org.); AYALA, Walmir (org.) Brazilian Dictionary of Plastic Artists - D - L. Brasília: MEC: INL, 1973. v. 2, Pt. 1, Il. P&B. (Specialized Dictionary, 5). New York from 1970 to 1972. If before the trip, following a phase of abstraction close to the informal, its painting already announced a willingness to dialogue with the high civilization of the machine, the appeal of technology only attracts it definitively during and after the direct experience of the American metropolis. (...) Since then, especially the machine itself, the mechanisms of movement that it uses in kinetic constructions with small hidden engines in boxes and triggering light patterns in continuously repeated cycles. (...) Focused on the playful use of light and movement, Ivan Freitas seemed for some time, between 1972 and 1974, to have abandoned or placed apart, in a less privileged position in his work, the painting. More recently, however, she has recovered the predominance, always seeking the machine as a source of visual effects, within the strict limits of an activity - that of painting - which is still intended to result exclusively from human action, independent of the machine, although considering it carefully and wondering".
