Eusébio de Matos (Salvador, 1629 — Idem, July 7, 1692)
Brazilian speaker and painter, brother of Gregório de Matos.
Eusébio de Matos e Guerra was born in Bahia in 1629. In 1636, his brother, the poet Gregório de Matos, was born. In 1644, Eusébio de Matos professes in the Society of Jesus. In 1659, he represents the interests of his family in transactions with the colleges of the Jesuits of Bahia and Santo Antão in Lisbon. He is called to Lisbon to be appointed speaker of the king – and prevented from going by his superiors (1669). publishes in Lisbon the Ecce Homo (1677). He leaves the Society of Jesus and joins the Order of Carmo, with the name of Friar Eusébio da Soledade (1680). He published in Lisbon, in 1681, the Sermon of Soledade and Tears of Mary Most Holy Our Lady. That same year, Antônio Vieira returns to Bahia. In 1694, after his death, his hitherto unpublished sermons were published in Lisbon. In 1923, it was published in Rio de Janeiro, in the "Classic Shelf of the Portuguese Language Magazine", Ecce Homo).
