Biography

Carlos Scliar (Santa Maria RS 1920 - Rio de Janeiro RJ 2001)

Carlos Scliar was a painter, draftsman, engraver, illustrator, set designer, screenwriter and graphic designer. In 1934, he studied with Gustav Epstein in Porto Alegre. In 1938, he participated in the foundation of the Riograndense Association of Plastic Arts Francisco Lisboa. Between 1939 and 1947, residing in São Paulo, he joined the São Paulo Artistic Family (FAP). In 1942, he published his first album of lithographs, Fábula. He made illustrations for books and theater sets. In Rio de Janeiro, in 1944, he wrote and directed the documentary Escadas, about the painters Arpad Szenes and Vieira da Silva. Summoned by the Brazilian Expeditionary Force (FEB), he participated in the Second World War, in Italy, between 1944 and 1945. Living in Paris from 1947 to 1950, he contacted the Mexican engraver Leopoldo Mendez. Back in Brazil, he founded, with Vasco Prado, the Porto Alegre Engraving Club. In 1956, he began to live in Rio de Janeiro, where he was director of the art department of Senhor magazine between 1958 and 1960. Loeb, Carlos Nicolaievski and the painter José Paulo Moreira da Fonseca. In 1969, Carlos Scliar's Caderno de Guerra was published, with his drawings made during the war. In the 1970s, he executed panels for the Municipality of Porto Alegre. Between 1992 and 1999, the Ouro Preto Show, Saudades da Quem Te Ama toured several Brazilian cities. In 1999, he made the 1500/2000 serigraphy album - A Rediscovery of Brazil.

Critical Comment

In his drawings, prints and early career paintings, the artist demonstrates affinities with the expressionist aspects, in addition to proximity to the works of Candido Portinari (1903 - 1962) and Lasar Segall (1891 - 1957).

his research, during the 1940s, It focuses on engraving, working mainly with lithography and linoleum. In 1944, the artist fought in the 2nd World War (1939-1944), remaining in Italy for almost a year. During this period, he makes more than a hundred drawings by India, in which he does not present records of war or heroism, but desolate or anonymous landscapes welded at rest.

In 1949, he publishes an album with the illustrations he makes for the French edition of the book Red Seara, by Jorge Amado. In these engravings, it presents approximations with the popular woodcut and seeks to correspond to the arid and violent climate existing in the novel. With the foundation of the Porto Alegre Engraving Club, he does, like other group members, travel through the gaucho land in order to register regional customs. Later, in addition to graphic works for newspapers, he dedicates himself to painting and collage again. His most constant themes are still lifes, in which he dialogues with the work of Giorgio Morandi (1890 - 1964) and also with that of Picasso (1881 - 1973) and Braque (1882 - 1963).

Criticism

"Talking about Carlos Scliar is not very easy for me. greatness of the plastic sense in which it is expressed (...). It does not make social painting because it wants to do social painting. The social, that is, a certain manifestation of the human, is in it only a contingency, an accident of experience. Proof that, in his case, every discussion is useless, he is convinced that the subject is secondary, although his plastic and human instinct leads him to the images of the drama. It is not about voluntary preference, but of instinctive sympathy".
Ruben Navarra (1943)
PONTUAL, Roberto. biographical script. In: ___. Scliar: the real in reflex and transfiguration. Rio de Janeiro: Brazilian Civilization, 1970. p. 167-214.

"Sliar's position is singular: it has always been noticed as an independent, since its decision to return to painting, (...) It was to be part of one of the trends in use in Europe as noted in the 60s and '70s. Scliar preferred not to stand out in the spontaneous way that led him to the faithful observation of the reality of nature and objects, intention to communicate to be understood, without sowing riddles and hermeticism, proposing a theme formed from purely recognizable components, simple and readable images at first sight, emerging an inventive personal chromatic.

Its mode, from the beginning to the most recent phase, is the traditional Characterized by the evident pleasure of drawing, showing the spirit of the shapes wrapped in peaceful and serene colors, expressions of convincing pleasure, giving a uniform visual value and a concise and well-defined consistency of what it represents. Reality can contain infinities of variations". 3.

"The presence and work of Carlos Scliar illuminate some important situations in the Brazilian plastic creation of the last almost five decades. In the early 1940s, coming from Natal to São Paulo from Rio Grande do Sul to São Paulo, he joined the São Paulo artistic family, performing paintings and engravings marked by the expressionism of social commitment. (...) After the return to Rio in 1956, and the initial practice as a graphic artist, since then always stimulating, he focused more and more on painting, plus the intense work in serigraphy from 1967 onwards. Diversified in still life, Landscapes, Navy and Portraits, the work of Carlos Scliar as a painter, for the last 25 years, has been the patient attempt to apprehend reality in its pulse of time and silence. For this, he made reflection and discipline Fundamentals/Instruments. But, sure of its internal structure and its executive wisdom, it never failed to shelter, in the act of painting, chance, surprise and deviation. His landscapes were thus approaching abstractions supported by precise and apparent geometric solid planes. (...)"

Testimonies

"I met, in 1949, the Mexican recorder Leopoldo Mendez.

We participated in the World Congress for Peace in Paris. I already knew his works and I consider him one of the great contemporary recorders. We became friends, and when he returned to Mexico he sent me a beautiful collection of originals with works by all the artists who formed the Taller de Grafica Popular. Leopold Mendez was president of this engraving workshop together with Hannes Meyer, one of the directors of the Bauhaus, from the Weimar Republic in Pre-Hitler Germany.

I was already preparing my return to Brazil. If Europe really served me, it was to make me aware of the fact that my country, my childhood, my training - even though there were European influences - were fundamental to guide what would be my path.

I received permission from Leopoldo Mendez to bring the engravings. Rio and São Paulo, at the end of the 40s, were total cultural and political agitation. They were organized, even in the two cities, almost simultaneously, several museums of modern art".

SCLIAR, Carlos. Carlos Scliar. In: Os Engraving Clubes do Brasil. São Paulo: Pinacoteca do Estado, 1994. P. 11.

"I must say that, at that moment, there was only one activist from the Communist Party in the group. It was me. All the others could even be sympathizers, but they were not affiliated. [...] but they all thought in a coinciding way: they had a generous idea of the world. There was an elite position, crystallized in São Paulo, that art should reach a certain audience, impenetrable. For us, art was communication. [...] In 1955, we held an exhibition in a public square that was called for a national art. To force the public to see - the public would come in and look a little scared - we invented a vote. We asked people to give a quote for each engraving [...] When I came back from the Brazilian Expeditionary Force, I joined the PC. At that moment, the party was illegal. I was returning from the war, I considered myself a debtor to a whole situation that took place in Brazil and then I joined the party. Then, I was given the task of reorganizing the publication of Revista Horizonte. The magazine already existed, but it was practically over. We created the Associação dos Amigos da Engravura, me and Vasco Prado, especially to finance the magazine". Scliar. In: Engraving: Brazilian art of the 20th century. São Paulo: Itaú Cultural: Cosac & Naify, 2000. p. 90.

"I propose to make a realistic art, first place, because I don't want to talk to myself. Everything I do is aimed at conveying something. Leonardo's concepts (every art must be useful and the tiredness of being useful is a first death) were my headboard concepts.

Everyone warns me of the limitation that may involve my guidance. But after fifteen years of locked up in my room, wanting to know the problems of life through books, getting to know men through paintings, I found myself unsolved. Visiting the Museums of Europe (from 1947 to 1950), I realized the communicability of the works that had the human measure as a measure. I learned that one should draw in contact with reality. Nature is much richer than any museum or library.

I chose Rio Grande do Sul, where I was born, to try this path. We were two or three at the beginning and soon after ten young artists, who were concerned with performing national and realistic art. The engraving was initially presented as the most appropriate technique for a wide dissemination of the works".
