Carlos Scliar (Santa Maria RS 1920 - Rio de Janeiro RJ 2001)
Carlos Scliar was a painter, draftsman, printmaker, illustrator, set designer, screenwriter and graphic designer. In 1934, he studied with Gustav Epstein in Porto Alegre. In 1938, he took part in founding the Associação Riograndense de Artes Plásticas Francisco Lisboa. Between 1939 and 1947, while living in São Paulo, he was a member of the Família Artística Paulista (FAP). In 1942, he published his first album of lithographs, Fábula. He made illustrations for books and sets for the theater. In Rio de Janeiro, in 1944, he wrote and directed the documentary Escadas, about the painters Arpad Szenes and Vieira da Silva. Drafted into the Brazilian Expeditionary Force (FEB), he served in the Second World War, in Italy, between 1944 and 1945. While living in Paris from 1947 to 1950, he came into contact with the Mexican printmaker Leopoldo Méndez. Back in Brazil, he founded the Clube de Gravura de Porto Alegre with Vasco Prado. In 1956, he moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he was director of the art department of the magazine Senhor between 1958 and 1960. He founded the publishing house Ediarte in 1962, with the collectors Gilberto Chateaubriand, Michel Loeb and Carlos Nicolaievski and the painter José Paulo Moreira da Fonseca. In 1969, Caderno de Guerra de Carlos Scliar was published, with the drawings he made during the war. In the 1970s, he produced panels for the Porto Alegre City Hall. Between 1992 and 1999, the exhibition Ouro Preto, Saudades de Quem Te Ama toured several Brazilian cities. In 1999, he produced the silkscreen album 1500/2000 - A Redescoberta do Brasil.
Critical Commentary
In his drawings, prints and paintings from the beginning of his career, the artist shows affinities with expressionist currents, as well as closeness to the works of Candido Portinari (1903 - 1962) and Lasar Segall (1891 - 1957).
During the 1940s, his research centers on printmaking, working mainly with lithography and linocut. In 1944, the artist fights in the Second World War (1939-1945), remaining in Italy for almost a year. During this period, he makes more than a hundred India ink drawings, which show no record of war or heroism, but rather desolate landscapes or anonymous soldiers at rest.
In 1949, he publishes an album with the illustrations he made for the French edition of Jorge Amado's novel Seara Vermelha. In these prints, he comes close to popular woodcut and seeks to match the arid and violent atmosphere of the novel. With the founding of the Clube de Gravura de Porto Alegre, he travels, like other members of the group, through the land of Rio Grande do Sul in order to record regional customs. Later, besides graphic work for newspapers, he devotes himself once again to painting and collage. His most constant subjects are still lifes, in which he engages in dialogue with the work of Giorgio Morandi (1890 - 1964) and also with that of Picasso (1881 - 1973) and Braque (1882 - 1963).
Critiques
"Talking about Carlos Scliar is not very easy for me. The tendency toward the human subject, which I have just commented on, has its greatest example in his painting, not only for its constancy but for the grandeur of the plastic sense in which it is expressed (...). He does not make social painting because he wishes to make social painting. The social, that is, a certain manifestation of the human, is in him merely a contingency, an accident of experience. He simply sees human images, which happen to embody a social drama. And the proof that, in his case, all discussion is useless is that he is convinced that the subject is secondary, even though his plastic and human instinct leads him to the images of drama. It is not a matter of voluntary preference, but of instinctive sympathy".

"Scliar's position is singular: he has always stood out as an independent, ever since his decision to return to painting, (...) a professional composure opposed to what was fashionable in his youth, when the general concern was to fit into one of the trends in use in Europe, as was seen in the 1960s and '70s. Scliar preferred not to depart from the spontaneous manner that led him to the faithful observation of the reality of nature and objects, an intention to communicate in order to be understood, without sowing enigmas and hermeticism, proposing a subject matter made of purely recognizable components, simple images legible at first sight, from which a personal chromatic inventiveness emerges.
His manner, from the beginning to the most recent phase, is the traditional one, characterized by an evident pleasure in drawing, showing the spirit of forms wrapped in calm and serene colors, expressions of convincing appeal, giving a uniform visual value and a concise, well-defined consistency to what it represents. "The presence and work of Carlos Scliar shed light on some important situations in Brazilian visual art over the last nearly five decades. In the early 1940s, coming from his native Rio Grande do Sul to São Paulo, he joined the Família Artística Paulista, producing paintings and prints marked by socially committed expressionism. (...) After his return to Rio, in 1956, and his initial practice as a graphic artist, ever since always stimulating, he concentrated more and more on painting, together with intense work in silkscreen from 1967 on. Diversified into still lifes, landscapes, seascapes and portraits, Carlos Scliar's work as a painter over the last 25 years has been a patient attempt to grasp reality in its pulse of time and silence. "In 1949, I met the Mexican printmaker Leopoldo Mendez.
We were taking part in the World Peace Congress in Paris. I already knew his works and I consider him one of the great contemporary printmakers. We became friends, and when he returned to Mexico he sent me a beautiful collection of originals with works by all the artists who made up the Taller de Gráfica Popular. Leopoldo Mendez was president of this printmaking workshop together with Hannes Meyer, one of the directors of the Bauhaus, of the Weimar Republic in pre-Hitler Germany.
I was already preparing my return to Brazil. If Europe really served me in one thing, it was to make me aware of the fact that my country, my childhood, my upbringing - however much European influence there may have been - were fundamental in setting out what my path would be.
I received permission from Leopoldo Mendez to bring the prints. Rio and São Paulo, in the late 1940s, were in total cultural and political ferment. In both cities, almost simultaneously, several Museums of Modern Art were even being organized".

"I must say that, at that moment, there was only one Communist Party militant in the group. It was me. All the others might have been sympathizers, but they were not members. [...] But they all thought in a similar way: they had a generous idea of the world. There was an elite position, crystallized in São Paulo, that art should reach a certain segment of the public, an impenetrable segment. For us, art was communication. [...] In 1955, we held an exhibition in a public square called Por uma Arte Nacional. To make the public look - people came in and looked around somewhat startled -, we invented a vote. We asked people to give a rating to each print [...] When I came back from the Brazilian Expeditionary Force, I joined the PC. At that time, the party was illegal. I was coming back from the war, I considered myself indebted to a whole situation unfolding in Brazil, and so I joined the party. Next, I was given the task of reorganizing the publication of the magazine Horizonte. The magazine already existed, but it had practically come to an end. Vasco Prado and I created the Associação dos Amigos da Gravura especially to finance the magazine".

"I set out to make a realist art, in the first place, because I do not wish to talk to myself. Everything I make aims to convey something. Leonardo's concepts (all art must be useful, and being tired of being useful is a first death) were my bedside concepts.
Everyone warns me of the limitation my orientation may involve. But after fifteen years shut in my room, wanting to know the problems of life through books, to know people through paintings, I found myself without a solution. Visiting the museums of Europe (from 1947 to 1950), I realized the communicability of works whose measure was the human. I learned that one must draw in contact with reality. Nature is much richer than any museum or library.
I chose Rio Grande do Sul, where I was born, to attempt this path. There were two or three of us at the beginning and soon after ten young artists, concerned with making a national and realist art. Printmaking presented itself, at first, as the most suitable technique for a wide dissemination of the works".
