Carlos Prado (São Paulo SP 1908 - Idem 1992)
Carlos Prado was a painter, engraver, draftsman, ceramist and architect. He graduated in Architecture from the Escola Politécnica de São Paulo in the late 1920s. He later traveled to Europe, where he carried out improvement studies in urbanism. In São Paulo, he studied with Georg Elpons (1865–1939). In 1931, he maintained a studio with Flávio de Carvalho (1899–1973) and Antonio Gomide (1895–1967). With these artists, he founded, alongside Di Cavalcanti (1897–1976) and others, the Clube dos Artistas Modernos (CAM). He held only three individual exhibitions: the first in 1943, in his studio in São Paulo; the second in 1976, at the Museum of Modern Art in São Paulo (MAM/SP); and the last one in December 1980, at the inauguration of Studio José Duarte de Aguiar, also in São Paulo. He participated in the 1st and 2nd São Paulo International Biennial, in 1951 and 1953.
Published the albums Memórias sem Palavras (1954) and A Modern Cidade (1958). He produced paintings, drawings and engravings with a predominance of social themes, as in street sweepers (1935), one of his best-known works. He also performed nudes and still lifes.
Critical comment
Despite participating in the foundation of the Clube dos Artistas Modernos - CAM, in the early 1930s, Carlos Prado opts for a certain isolation in his artistic trajectory. Social issues are often present in his works, in static compositions, in which a metaphysical atmosphere predominates, which overcomes the simple representation of reality, as in street sweepers, 1935.
In a football game, 1935, despite the speed and From the movement inherent to this sport, the composition is presented so that the movement seems frozen; The artist introduces solemnity to the scene, eliminating any clear indications of the passage of time.
In his work he presents erotic elements and still lifes are carried out carefully, in which he values the solidity and immobility of the volumes. His performance as a recorder also stands out, in the 1950s.
Criticism
"Carlos Prado, one of the founders of CAM, but who opted for an attitude of isolation, is the author of a work something forgotten but of highlight in the context.
