Critical comment
Bassano Vaccarini has a diversified production. He works in scenography, painting, sculpture, works with scrap and plastic resins, in addition to experiences in the areas of cinema, photography and architecture. Until the mid-1960s, he dedicated himself to performing abstract compositions. As the art historian Teixeira Leite notes, more recently, the figuration in his paintings retaken, presenting affinities with expressionism. In some of his sculptures, he works with organic, abstract forms, combined with figurative elements.
For the art historian Tadeu Chiarelli, Vaccarini could be defined as an experimental artist par excellence, dedicated to the research of new supports and materials, which adapts to the of his production.
Criticism
"The heavy, the ponderable in Vaccarini's sculpture, also present in many works carried out with scrap, derives from the importance that the masses have in the context of each work. It could be said that the masses have a strong recollection, as if the shapes tried to concentrate or were attracted to a nucleus of the sculpture, in a considerable concentration of matter, in other cases, more rare, there is a sense of abandonment, as if matter were loose, a rest, occupying the Maximum of your space. These two aspects, when they appear in the same work, are one of the causes of drama.
(...) Vaccarini has experimented with all the techniques, all the resources, all the materials. It sculpted by subtraction, by addition and by junctions, that is, it used the hoist, the modeling and the weld. It used materials such as marble, soapstone, wood and even cement for carving. wax, clay and as many substitutes as they found served him for the modeling that passed to noble and traditional metals such as bronze or lead. Scrap has turned into various forms with welding. He did not repudiate plastic resins and scraps to create shapes. This entire range of techniques and materials was used to reproduce forms of nature, to suggest, to deform or to elaborate abstract shapes.
(...) Among the various techniques used in the three dimensions, above and beyond these techniques, two veins appear. A rare, almost exceptional, linked to slender, almost graphic shapes, carried out with scrap and torch. Another, broad, powerful, fertile, always present, using the most different resources and materials, plastic in essence, the result of mass games. In the second streak, any difference in the result disappears between the use of modeling or carving. It is in it that the most expressive core of Vaccarini is found, where his soul and his ancestry are hidden."
