Yara Tupynambá (Montes Claros MG 1932)
Yara Tupynambá was a painter, record company, draftsman, muralist and teacher. At the age of 17, he got his first job as a typing candidate at Caixa Econômica Estadual, where he remained for two years. Thanks to his ability to type quickly, he made a deal with the boss to have more free time, which he started to dedicate to the drawing. He began his art studies in 1950, in Belo Horizonte, with Guignard, and deepened in engraving in 1954 with Misabel Pedrosa, later perfecting himself with Oswaldo Goeldi, in Rio de Janeiro. He studied at the Faculty of Visual Arts of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), where, in 1967, he defended a thesis on Albert Dürer and, in the following year, he began to teach engraving at the same institution.
Yara dedicated himself especially to the Wood engraving, preferring black and white to the use of colors. On his oil canvases, he portrayed congados, cavalhadas and guitar players, themes that referred to his adolescence and travels through the interior of Minas Gerais. He even made some of his own vinyl paints. She was invited to make a mural on the Inconfidência Mineira at the UFMG rectory, inaugurated in 1969, and later became director of the University's School of Fine Arts. In the 1970s, he produced several murals for residences, commercial establishments and public bodies, such as the Minas mural, from the 17th to the 20th century, for the Legislative Assembly of Minas Gerais. Ferros, in Minas Gerais, which portrays Adão and Eve Nus and caused controversy, leading the mayor to hire insurance for the work. He researched the painting of the 18th century in churches of Ouro Preto and Sabará, creating drawings on chests and trunks, in addition to portraying historical scenes and symbols such as coats of arms. He led the Atelier Vivo at the Bienal Nacional de São Paulo in 1974, where he presented a research in the educational area and with banners. He received a scholarship from the Pratt Institute and traveled to New York, returning to Belo Horizonte to act as a cultural advisor for the Minas Gerais Tourism Company (Turminas) and coordinate a program to requalify the Minas Gerais handicrafts for the Ministry of Labor. In 1992, she was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of Belo Horizonte by the Government of Minas Gerais, being several times chosen as the highlight of the arts by critics and honored in poems, such as the exhibition, written by Carlos Drummond de Andrade.
Criticism
"(...) It is the magical universe of Yara, in line with magical surrealism, its current concern, where not everything is in accordance with logic. The unfolding of landscapes in contrast to romantic figures - a man and A woman, and most of the time only the woman - confuses the surface with the seabed, or else internal with external environments in a perfect coexistence of the unreal with the real. "The work of Yara Tupynambá in drawing and engraving, extending for twenty continuous years, proves once again this close connection with the land and history of Minas Gerais, which is a hallmark essential of so many artists born there or there since the presence and lyrical teaching of Guignard. (...) "The attraction of white and black, whose plastic effect has always seduced me much more than chromaticism and ranges. I like to work directly on the material or support in order to imprint on it the objectification of my gesture directed by emotionality. Now, wood is the support that most faithfully receives the artist's smallest digital gestures... I try to reconcile in my current engraving the slot and texture problems, serving as the background for the first. Then I try to make the white function as atmosphere or 'air'. and, finally, I intend to release the area and volume of the composition beyond the field of the plate, giving it a dynamic."

"This is how I can designate my last series of works that represent life and Minas Gerais culture: the mountain, the oratory, the flower that is born wild in the Sertão, the churches, the golden arabesques, the masts with flags, the fireworks of the feasts of São João. For us miners, the strongest symbols of this national soil.
Minas is a state of mind and, therefore, even when in long cities, the miner evokes him, like Carlos Drummond de Andrade in these verses:
