Van Gogh (1853 - 1890)
Vincent van Gogh is one of the most famous and influential artists in the history of art. Born in 1853 in Holland, he was a post-impressionist painter known for his vibrant colors, expressive brushstrokes and unique style. His work is considered one of the most important of the 19th century and he is often cited as one of the pioneers of modern art.
Van Gogh's life was marked by personal tragedies and mental instability, and he never lived to see the success of his work. He grew up in a middle-class family in the city of Zundert, where his father was a Calvinist pastor. In 1888, Van Gogh moved to the city of Arles, in the south of France, where he planned to found a studio of art. During his time in Arles, Van Gogh produced some of his best-known works, including starry night, the yellow house and sunflowers.
However, Van Gogh's mental health began to deteriorate rapidly. He suffered a nervous breakdown in December 1888 and cut part of his left ear. He was hospitalized and then spent some time in a health house in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, where he painted many works, including the Brotherhood of Men.
In 1890, Van Gogh moved to the city of Auvers-sur-Oise, near Paris, to be closer to his brother Theo. He continued to paint, but his mental health continued to worsen. In July 1890, he committed suicide with a shot in the chest. He was only 37 years old.
Although Van Gogh died in relative obscurity, his work was rediscovered and recognized after his death. Today, his paintings are some of the most valuable and recognized in the art world. His work influenced countless later artists and continues to be studied and appreciated around the world.
