Tito de Alencastro (Rio de Janeiro RJ 1934 - São Paulo SP 1999)
Tito de Alencastro was a painter, draftsman, printmaker, mosaicist and set designer. José Tito Regis de Alencastro entered the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes (Enba) in Rio de Janeiro in 1956, where he studied drawing with Zaluar (1924-1987) and composition with Quirino Campofiorito (1902-1993) and Santa Rosa (1909-1956). At the same time, he studied mosaic techniques with José Miraes and metal engraving with Johnny Friedlaender (1912-1992) at the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro (MAM/RJ). He graduated in Museology from the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes (MNBA), where he took classes with Gustavo Barroso. He performed as an actor and singer in several chamber concerts and operas in Rio de Janeiro. In 1961, he settled in São Paulo, where he began managing the Chico Rei antique shop.
He held his first solo exhibition at Galeria Seta, in São Paulo, in 1966. As a set designer, he worked on the film Roleta Russa [Russian Roulette] and on the plays O Grande Sonhador [The Great Dreamer], Você Pode Ser o Que Quiser [You Can Be Whatever You Want], Macho Beleza [Beauty Macho] and Monólogo a Dois [Monologue for Two], the last three written by him. In 1979, he executed the panels Os Imigrantes [The Immigrants] and O Trabalho e o Lazer [Work and Leisure].
Critiques
"Tito's painting today conveys to me a sense of peace with things, the peace of man with his things and the truth of his relationship with them. Fish, houses, doors, the moon, archaic dolls with a strange 'Ashanti' connotation, snakes, girls skipping rope - all these things are at peace, in fraternal coexistence, which makes me understand a man who fraternizes with the cosmos".
