Thamiris Mandú (São Paulo - 1990)
Thamiris Mandú is a Brazilian multi-artist. His work with ceramics starts from clay as a matter of memory, celebration and communication with his ancestors. Through manual modeling and the technique of the chord, Thamiris Mandú investigates the clay's ability to record gestures, stories and presences, building sculptures that articulate the body, territory and Afro-diasporic heritage.
In its process, Thamiris Mandú mixes different types of clay, creating tones, textures and compositions of their own. The artist calls this technique “miscegenate” the matter itself. The material gesture relates to his experience and the mixing stories that cross the formation of the African diaspora in Brazil, transforming clay into a field of investigation into identity, memory and belonging.
Thamiris Mandú's sculptures sometimes take shape. human, plant and animal. For the artist, these forms are different possibilities of representing the presence of her ancestors and their forces: on earth, in the forest, in animals and also in human form.
In the face of the historical processes of erasing of African references in Brazil, Thamiris Mandú uses clay to rebuild bonds and create images for what has often not been registered or preserved.
