Nati Canto
Pirate
biopolymer of annatto, grape, açaí, black cocoa and green spirulina on wood
2025
60 x 34 x 7cm
In Pirate, Nati Canto produces the very material with which he builds the work. The formulation of the biopolymer is a fundamental part of its artistic making: different components are combined according to procedures developed by the artist, establishing a specific matter from which the form becomes possible.
The work integrates a continuous investigation by Nati Canto on material production in the field of art. His interest is not restricted to the formal possibilities of an existing matter, but moves to the very elaboration of a matter intended for artistic production. In this sense, making the material is not a stage prior to the work, but a constitutive part of its realization. In a pirate, matter is itself the result of an artistic decision.
