Orlando Teruz (Rio de Janeiro RJ 1902 - Idem 1984)
Pintor, Professor.
Orlando Rabello Teruz, studies at the National School of Fine Arts - ENBA between 1920 and 1923, is a student of Baptista da Costa and Rodolfo Chambelland, having, the following year, his first participation in the General Exhibition of Fine Arts of Rio de Janeiro. In 1934, he received a travel award abroad, which he enjoyed only in 1939, when he traveled to France, Holland and Italy, but is forced to interrupt it due to the outbreak of the Second World War, 1939-1945. He works with Lucio Costa and Candido Portinari for the implementation of the modern division at the National Salon of Fine Arts, which becomes effective in 1940. In 1944, he was part of the exhibition of modern Brazilian paintings, held at the Burlington House, headquarters of the Royal Academy London of Art. Participates in 1951 and 1953 of the 1st and 2nd International Biennials of São Paulo. He works as a painting teacher at the Instituto de Belas Artes da Guanabara in the mid-1950s. His works are exhibited in several individual exhibitions, both in Brazil and abroad, during the 1960s, also starting to interact with important collections from all over the world, such as those of the Museum of São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand - MASP, from the National Museum of Fine Arts - MNBA and the Hermitage Museum, in São Petesburg, Russia. In the 1970s, he began with his family the formation of his private museum in the Tijuca neighborhood, in Rio de Janeiro. Orlando Teruz, his work is very close to the production of Candido Portinari, with whom he has lived since his training at the National School of Fine Arts - ENBA, in Rio de Janeiro, both in formal and thematic terms. Both propose a modern painting, which escapes the solutions determined by the academic study, but maintains the relationship with the tradition. Its theme addresses childhood scenes - countless and present in all periods of the painter's vast production - horses, popular meetings. According to historian Walmir Ayala, Teruz's conception of modernity coincides with "the yearnings of the modernist seed: a daily life of Brazilianness, in the scenes and figures recognizable at first sight as ours." For what constitutes the main characteristic of Teruz's painting: an "intermediate level between the old and the new, the norm and the rupture, according to a referral taken little by little, daily, without major contradictions or concerns."2 In this threshold between modern and traditional, Teruz slips, sometimes in solutions brought by the vanguard movements, with surrealism being the most striking reference with regard to dreamlike settings, although present in his late production, as in horses, 1969 or roses, 1965. Once again here, the lowering of the shades of brown and blue refers to the Portinari of 1940. Religious themes also permeate the production of Teruz, from the 1930s.

Criticism
"One of the most obvious characteristics of Teruz's work is sensuality. full and carnal, but the warmth of his paints, the peculiar play of light that enhances the shapes - whether the hips of a horse or the legs of a girl. Baroque of its surroundings, whether in the sloppy and soft posture of the legs or arms. Interestingly, Teruz painted his themes with such sensuality that he never had space for the erotic itself. of two or three stronger incursions to the erotic, such as the girl and the horse, where two of her favorite themes mix and, because they merge, form a double meaning. The theme of motherhood, one of its constants, finds in Teruz one of the more bountiful exponents of Brazilian painting".
