Biography

Newton Rezende (São Paulo SP 1912 - Rio de Janeiro RJ 1994)

Newton Rezende was a painter, draftsman, printmaker and sculptor. Self-taught in painting, Newton de Rezende Silva traveled to Buenos Aires in 1946, where he worked as an advertising artist. Back in Brazil, he settled in Rio de Janeiro and held his first solo exhibition at the Instituto dos Arquitetos do Brasil - IAB/RJ [Institute of Architects of Brazil]. In 1962, he took part in the International Advertising Competition in Miami, United States, receiving an honorable mention. In 1968, he was elected Director of the Year by the Clube dos Diretores de Arte do Brasil [Art Directors Club of Brazil]. In 1980, Ferreira Gullar (1930 - 2016) wrote a book about his work, published by Galeria Bonino. He was honored by Rede Globo on the program Noite Única [Unique Night], in 1983, and by Riotur in 1986.

Critiques

"(...) But the experimenter who had been imprisoned in Newton Rezende, set free for his life, would not stop. Now, freed from the first instrumental resources, others began to emerge, tentatively, in his painting: first, certain collages of old photographs, cut out in faithful accordance with the time of memory, suggesting a dating for its substance; soon after, without abandoning those, collages of typefaces cut from books and magazines, old or modern, in allusive details, in complete words, in pulverized words or in near-words, to thematic obsessions that were ideological, affective and even political; finally, inlays of coins or medals or other small objects - all to construct a permanent presence of the past in the historical man that each of us is, even when seeking to be completely detached from his before and a mere proposition of a project after or now".
Antônio Houaiss
PONTUAL, Roberto. Dicionário das artes plásticas no Brasil. Rio de Janeiro: Civilização Brasileira, 1969.

"A figurative painter who strictly speaking cannot be claimed by any movement or trend, Newton Rezende combines in his work marked gifts of lyricism with a good-humored conception of beings and things, instilling in them a slight surrealist note. His is a free painting, well articulated in its craftsmanship, which plays while barely concealing the emotion with which it faces certain themes: true art, free of theories and prejudices of any kind, (...)"
