Martinho de Haro (São Joaquim SC 1907 - Florianópolis SC 1985)
Painter, designer and muralist. He started in painting in Lages, Santa Catarina, in 1920, and individually exhibited for the first time at the Municipal Council of Florianópolis, in 1926. As a scholarship holder of the Santa Catarina government, he studies at the National School of Fine Arts (ENBA), in Rio de Janeiro, from 1927 to 1937, taking classes with Henrique Cavaleiro (1892-1975) and Rodolfo Chambelland (1879-1967). He works as an assistant to João Timóteo in the decoration of the Church of Nossa Senhora da Pompéia, in 1930, and of Eliseu Visconti (1866-1944) in the execution of the Panô of the Municipal Theater, from 1930 to 1935. In 1931, he participated in the National Salon of Fine Arts, organized by Lucio Costa (1902-1998). In 1938, he leaves for France, where he studies with Otto Friesz in the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. Due to the beginning of the war, he returned to São Joaquim in 1939, remaining there until 1944, when he moved to Florianópolis, a city where he lives until his death.
Criticism
"Martinho de Haro is a permanent Brazilian painter, and with a rare story covering the times of pioneering spirit and development of modern art in Brazil. Undoubtedly, alongside the landscaping of Pancetti and Guignard, the figures of di cavalcanti, the research of Martinho de Haro is required, which, in a certain way, stands out almost unique in the proposal of the naked and still life today. (...) Theoretical and materials of the young discoveries, Martin of Haro remained peaceful and healthy, on the path of a painting that overcomes the simple recording of the subject, and transfigures with a very own sensitivity and color, the regional atmospheres, the universalism of provincial objects, the poetry of the body of the which extracts an unconventional level of beauty and much more from the spirit than from the line. (...) Martinho de Haro went through several themes: landscape, still life, portrait and self-portrait, religious motifs, nudes, flowers, etc. Despite this, the clear variant of the phases in its path is very small. If we put aside the heavy painting of an expressionism loaded with matter and shadow, from the 1920s, and the regional reminiscences of the rural activities with which in the 1930s it imposed itself on the first judgment of the artistic environment of Rio de Janeiro, everything else was a sure variation on the language."
