Biography

Maria Auxiliadora (Campo Belo MG 1938 - São Paulo SP 1974)

Maria Auxiliadora was a painter. Self-taught in the visual arts, she began her artistic production around 1954. In 1968, she joined Solano Trindade's group in Embu, São Paulo, and held her first solo exhibition. Posthumously, the artist's work was featured in the book Mitopoética de 9 Artistas Brasileiros [Mythopoetics of 9 Brazilian Artists], by Lélia Coelho Frota.

Critiques

"Maria Auxiliadora's pictures are characterized by their great vitality and chromatic vibrancy. She has the Afro-Brazilian magical sense and one of the most fascinating wealths of rhythmic and coloristic creation. Her work combines authentic, deep experiences of popular life with an imagination that builds chromatic and linear architectures, fusing a fine decorative ability with a convincing and genuine popular feeling. She manages to unite reality and dream. For more than two years now, Maria Auxiliadora has enriched her oil painting with collage elements. She later gave up collage and began using only relief obtained with modeling paste. She was thus able to considerably intensify the dynamism of her compositions and give them the delightful character of popular handicraft, becoming one of the striking figures of our primitivism".
