Biography

Lotus Lobo (Belo Horizonte MG 1943)

recorder, draftsman and painter.

In Belo Horizonte, Lotus Amanda Maria Lobo de Alvarenga is studying Fine Arts at Guignard School, 1962 to 1965. In 1963, he studied lithography with João Quaglia (1928) and mural technique with Inimá de Paula (1918 - 1999) and, between 1964 and 1966, participates in the Experimental Atelier Grupo Oficina. He lives in Rio de Janeiro in 1968, and does an internship at Planus, a lithographic workshop specializing in copies for artists. The following year, he discovers a collection of lithographic matrices with product labels from former mining industries and develops a series of engravings on which he prints these marks on transparent materials. With these works, he wins the Itamaraty Award at the 10th International Biennial of São Paulo, in 1969. He receives a scholarship from the French government and lives in Paris from 1971 to 1972, and studies at the École Supérieure des Arts et. Industries Graphiques [School of Arts and Graphic Industries] and at the École d'Arts-Plastiques et Sciences de l'Art, University of Paris. He teaches engraving at Escola Guignard from 1966 to 1984, and then transferred to Tiradentes, Minas Gerais. In this city, he is responsible for the assembly and direction of the Casa de Engravura Largo do Ó lithographic workshop, and for the coordination of the Memory of Lithography project in the state. He returned to Belo Horizonte in 1991, and continues to teach at the Guignard school. From 1993 onwards, he dedicated himself to the work of a studio and to projects on the history of industrial lithography in Minas Gerais.

Critical commentary

The first prints by Lotus Lobo start from architectural motifs. Linked to mining cities: doors, balconies or church towers, however, maintaining dialogue with abstraction. In the studio of the Guignard School, he discovers lithographic stones and zinc plates, old matrices for the stamping of maps, diplomas and labels. Interested in the graphic and memorialistic aspects of those images, she began to carry out a research aimed at the rescue of these industrial mining lithographic marks, carrying out interventions and using the most diverse supports. Subsequently, it creates abstract and organic shapes based on these matrices.

The artist also stands out for dedicating herself, from 1988 onwards, to a broad project for the restoration, preservation and dissemination of the lithographic memory of Minas Gerais, carried out in the Engraving House. of the Ó, in Tiradentes.

Criticism

"Lotus, without fear or apprehension, driven by a lot of courage and breath, knowing perfectly well what he wants, with a cultural basis arising from much study and Reading, he gives himself body and soul to the effort of communication and, in tune with our technological age, he seeks more representative symbols and signifiers through them and seeks through them a renewal of his art in all latitudes, in an insatiable attempt to signify in manufacturing codes the present civilization industrialist, whose 'pathos', living elsewhere in universal human intentions, is easily apprehensible by the public. (...) and, a legitimate product of the 'image civilization', of which René Huyghe, born under the aegis of his tyranny, it is understandable that the artist bowed to her instances; However, miner by state of grace, integrated in a process of acculturation that, protected between mountains, enters through the pores, is also understandable that it would turn to the things of Minas, selecting among them the best regional distinctive images, appropriating them and elevating them, by magic. of art, to universal and permanent expression (...)".
Pierre Santos
Winter Festival, 5. , Ouro Preto, 1971. Artistas Mineiros 60/70. Text by Pierre Santos. Preto: Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, 1971.

"For Lotus Lobo, the label that matters is the one produced by deactivated printers, in zinc or stone, in which a memory is printed, with which it works. In the discarded matrices, Lotus looks for solutions so that the images do not come out inverted; For this, use parchment or acrylic paper. Its lithographs printed on transparent paper are produced as label overlays. In the acrylic works, he proposes a game for the spectator: Lotus prints labels on two acrylic plates that, mounted on parallel rails, are superimposed, and the observer can manipulate them and form the most diverse overlaps. In these works, Lotus does not interfere with the matrices, which he does in other lithographs. Although it always prints the labels, it can intervene in them, and does so often, keeping the product's chromatic code; The label of the butter can follows the code of red and yellow."
