Evandro Carlos Jardim (São Paulo SP 1935)
Evandro Carlos Jardim is a recorder, draftsman and painter. In 1953, he joined the School of Fine Arts of São Paulo, where he studied painting with Theodoro Braga (1872–1953), Antonio Paim Vieira and Joaquim da Rocha Ferreira (1900–1965), in addition to modeling and sculpture with Vicente Larocca (1892–19--). Between 1956 and 1957, he studied metal engraving with Francesc Domingo Segura (1893–1974), specializing in the technique of strong water. such as the School of Fine Arts, the Armando Álvares Penteado Foundation (FAAP) and the School of Communications and Arts of the University of São Paulo (ECA/USP). During the military regime, he promotes auctions of his works to help the relatives of political prisoners and collaborates with the movement for political amnesty.
In his graphic production, he often addresses the urban scenario of São Paulo. Demonstrates extreme technical care in the execution of his works and constantly re-elaborates certain images, such as Pico do Jaraguá, as well as representations of birds, fruits, windows and a dead horse.
Critical Comment
Evandro Carlos Jardim his work in art in the 1950s. He frequents spaces such as the Museum of Art of São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand - MASP and lives with important characters in the history of modernism in the city of São Paulo, including Sérgio Milliet (1898 - 1966). In 1953, he enrolled at the São Paulo School of Fine Arts, studying with Joaquim da Rocha Ferreira (1900 - 1965) and Vicente Larocca (1892 - 19--). Through the biennials, it comes into contact with part of the international modern production. Interested in artists such as Edvard Munch (1863 - 1944), Oskar Kokoschka (1886 - 1980) and Giorgio Morandi (1890 - 1964).
At the time From college, it starts in metal engraving with Francesc Domingo Segura (1893-1974). In his first works, the engraving resembles the drawing. Garden scratches copper plate with burin and dry tip, looking for technical improvement. Progressively, the engraved zones on the plates increase. The forms are conquered by the mastery of the techniques of ink and armored water. In his engravings from the 1960s, the artist lists different technical and aesthetic records. We see more realistic figures combined with geometric shapes and gestural graphics. In the series Interlagos, 1967, he mixes great black shapes with stained drawings of the urban landscape. He holds, in 1973, the individual at night, in the upper room, Cruzeiro do Sul, Lat. South 23º32'36", Long. W. Gr. 46º37'59", at MASP, where it presents three-dimensional engravings and objects in bronze, iron, aluminum and wood. In the prints, he works with a reduced repertoire of images. The same forms appear in different works, with new meanings. At that moment, as in much of his mature work, he takes advantage of the different graphic records and art genres to represent everyday images and themes. From 1976 onwards, he made detailed prints, where he explores still life, portrait and landscape. In the same decade, Jardim began to paint with greater intensity encouraged by his dealer, the artist Antônio Maluf (1926 - 2005).
In the 1980s, the figures gained greater independence. Jardim does not set the scenes, nor establish hierarchical relationships between printed forms. The figures have no formal bond, they are juxtaposed. They are associated with their closeness on paper and, together, sew narratives about the city of São Paulo. In 1991, he showed the series Figuras Jacentes, at Galeria São Paulo. There, the relationship between the elements is even more rarefied. The artist distributes the images on a blank paper, stained and divided into quadrilaterals. The images do not follow any order, establishing unexpected relationships with each other.
Criticism

"It interests me to reflect, in my work, on time and space. But the means I chose was the engraving. Why did I choose the engraving? I like it. Simply because I like engraving. And that gave me great freedom.
The drawings and the records... Without it I wouldn't make an engraving because I want to make an engraving, but because I try to move a reality or record something. For me, things pass through that line of expression that springs from internal needs.
