Arnaldo Angeli Filho (São Paulo SP 1956)

At 14 years old, Angeli publishes her first drawing in Senhor magazine. Self-taught, he learns to draw by copying the works of Millôr Fernandes (1923), Jaguar (1932) and Ziraldo (1932). His work is influenced by the underground cartoons of the American Robert Crumb (1943). In the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo, he publishes cartoons, from 1973 onwards, and, since 1983, daily strips in which he creates characters that portray urban types, especially Rê Bordosa, Bob Espipe and the old hippies wood & stock. In the 1980s, he published, by the publisher Circo, the magazine Chiclete com Banana, which launches a new cast of characters of his authorship, such as Walter Ego, Rigapov, Rhalah Rikota, Bibelô, Meiaoito and Nanico, Ritchi Pareide, Aderbal and the Skrotinhos. With Laerte (1951) and Glauco (1957-2010) creates the series Los Três Amigos, also published in Gum with Banana. In 1983, it illustrates the book by historian Lilia Moritz Schwartz, Republic Vou Ver!. In 1995, he published FHC: Unauthorized Biography, by Editora Essa, a collection of cartoons produced during the government of former president Fernando Henrique Cardoso (1931). For TV, Angeli produces sketches and scripts, working with the teams of the programs TV Colosso and Sai de Baixo, both from Rede Globo. Based on his work, director Otto Guerra released, in 2006, the animated feature Wood & Stock - Sex, oregano and rock'n roll. In 2008, he is one of the honorees at the 1st International Humor Festival in Rio de Janeiro, which presents Angeli/Genial, a retrospective show of the cartoonist's production. Also in that year, the animated short film Dossier Rê Bordosa is released, directed by César Cabral and based on the character created by Angeli. His drawings are included in the Encyclopedia of the Latin American Humor, from Colombia, the Brazilian humor anthology and the Khartoum and Caricature Museum of Basel, Switzerland. Currently, he draws for Folha de S. Paulo and his website on the Universo On-Line portal, with emphasis on the Let's Talk About Sex, Luke and Tantra strips and, in the "Net-Novela" the living dead, Rê Bordosa.
Critical Comment
Angeli has been drawing since childhood. As a teenager, he knows the periodical O Pasquim and is interested in the cartoons of Millôr Fernandes, Jaguar and Ziraldo. He confesses that he started by copying the work of these designers. At the same time, he met comic artists such as Robert Crumb, Wolinski (1934) and Jean Marc Reiser (1941-1983), who profoundly influence him. At the age of 14, he publishes his first drawing, in the magazine Senhor. In 1973, he inaugurated the political cartoon space in the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper, where he remained until 1982. In this interval he also collaborates with the periodicals Movimento, Versus and O Pasquim. In 1975, he took second place in the 2nd International Humor Show in Piracicaba.
In 1983, he abandoned the cartoon to dedicate himself to comic books. In Folha de S. Paulo, he leaves the political notebook and moves on to the illustrated, Caderno de Cultura, in which he publishes strips of his characters alongside foreign comic artists. Shortly after, with the editor Toninho Mendes, he founded the publisher Circo, aimed at adult comics, especially Brazilian authors. In 1984, Circo launched the book, Gum with Banana, gathering Angeli's strips with some urban types created for the newspaper. The publication's success leads the publisher to create a eponymous bimonthly magazine, and the first copy goes to newsstands in 1985.
Angeli creates comic strips and stories, with narratives of typical São Paulo, bohemia and life situations. everyday. There appear characters such as TudoBlue and Moçamba, Mara Tara, Wood & Stock, Rê Bordosa, Bob Cuspe, half-eight and runt, Krone and the Skrotinhos. Its production departs from the politicized tone of its cartoons and rediscovers the influences of the underground of the 1960s and 1970s, with an acidic approach to the criticism of customs. His trait becomes dirtier, bringing him closer to comic book artists such as the Frenchman Vuilleimin (1958).
In the 1990s, Angeli returned to the political cartoon in Folha de S. Paulo. In 1995, Editora Essa gathers some of its strips in the FHC volume: unauthorized biography. The cartoonist publishes daily strips at Folha de S. Paulo and in another 15 Brazilian newspapers, and in Diário de Notícias, in Lisbon. Your work takes on color. In addition to cartoons and strips, he publishes illustrations, less narratives than previous drawings. Some of the strips from this period are gathered in the Wood &Amp; Stock, Sex is a dirty thing, Luke and Tantra and the Skrotinhos, released by Devir.
