Antonio Maia (Carmópolis SE 1928 - Rio de Janeiro RJ 2008)
Antonio Maia was a painter, draftsman, engraver and illustrator. He spent his childhood in the interior of Sergipe, which influenced the development of a theme linked to popular religiosity in the Northeast. In 1955, he moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he began to work as a painter, adopting informal abstractionism as a style. Between 1955 and 1963, he dedicated himself to the research of textures. He held his first solo exhibition in 1960, in Cataguases, MG. In 1968, he received a travel award to the United States, sponsored by the Gallery of the Instituto Cultural Brasil-Estados. In 1973, his works were acquired by the Museum of Ontario, in Canada.
