Antonio Hélio Cabral (Marília SP 1948)
Antonio Hélio Cabral is a painter, draftsman, engraver and sculptor. He worked as a professor at Arstudium, at the Lasar Segall Museum and at the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo. In the early 1960s, he attended the workshop of Fausto Boghi, with whom he learned chisel techniques and carried out reliefs in Copper, in São Paulo. He studied Architecture at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of São Paulo (FAU/USP) between 1970 and 1974. In 1973, he began teaching drawing at Arstudium, in São Paulo.
From the second half From the 1970s, he attended sessions of a live model in the studio of Antônio Carelli (1926) and studied modeling and casting in plaster in the studio of Raphael Galvez (1907–1998). Between 1974 and 1984, he worked as a professor and coordinator of the art workshops at the Lasar Segall Museum and, from 1981 to 1984, he taught drawing and painting at the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo (PESP). In 1994, he was the curator of the exhibition Raphael Galvez: The City in the Shadow of the 40 – Paintings, held at PESP. authored by Leon Kossovitch. Cabral is mainly dedicated to painting, but also works with drawing, engraving and sculpture.
Critical Comment
With a background in Architecture, in the 1970s, Antonio Cabral studies with the artists Antônio Carelli (1926) and Raphael Galvez (1907-1998). Between 1974 and 1984, he works as a professor and coordinator of the Art Studio at the Lasar Segall Museum and, from 1981 to 1984, he teaches at the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo - PESP. In his production, he seeks to expand issues raised by expressionism and also by the works of the painters Francis Bacon (1909-1992) and Willem de Kooning (1904-1997). It performs a game of construction and deconstruction of the figure, created based on colored traces, as in the red figure (1986). In 1988 screens, he presents sensual female figures, carried out through irregular traces and color spots. The backgrounds have a great chromatic vibration, given by the rhythm of the brush strokes, as in violet or horizontal figures. It often uses mixed and changing colors.
In frames on display in 1999, as a portrait 7, Antonio Cabral builds the image from the handling of oily matter: the volumes of the face are perceived when changing the direction of the brush strokes. In this series, it eliminates the opposition between figure and background in works of great chromatic vibration.
Criticism
"Antonio Hélio Cabral has a rare and manifest pleasure in painting. ink, in destroying and reconstructing the image, and in shuffling the conventional visuality. "In Cabral, the figure appears and disappears, springs and deriving from the drive. tropic, it is in matter that it is configured and disfigured; avoiding the obvious of the figurative and the excluded from the antifigurative. Cabral dedicates the figure to matter, its end and its source.
