Biography

Alex Flemming (São Paulo SP 1954)

Alex Flemming is a painter, sculptor and engraver. He attended the Free Cinema Course at the Armando Álvares Penteado Foundation (FAAP), in São Paulo, between 1972 and 1974. In 1979 and 1980, he studied serigraphy with Regina Silveira (1939) and Julio Plaza (1938–2003), in addition to metal engraving with Romildo Paiva (1938). During the 1970s, he made short films and participated in several festivals.

In 1981, he traveled to New York, where he stayed for two years and developed a project at the Pratt Institute, with a scholarship from the Fulbright Foundation. From the 1990s onwards, he began to carry out interventions in exhibition spaces and produced paintings with a strong autobiographical character. He also began to incorporate furniture such as chairs and armchairs in his works, applying paints, letters and texts on them.

Between 1993 and 1994, he taught at the Kunstakademie of Oslo, Norway. Since 1995, he resides in Germany, maintaining a constant presence in the exhibitions held in Brazil. In 1998, he created glass panels for the Sumaré station of the São Paulo Metro, using photos of common people on which he applied colored letters with excerpts from poems by Brazilian authors. The representation of the human body and maps of conflicting regions are themes present in the Body Builders series (2001–2002).

In 2002, the books Alex Flemming, by Edusp, were published by EDUSP, organized by Ana Mae Barbosa, With texts by several specialists in visual arts, and Alex Flemming, a poetics..., by Katia Canon, by Metalivros. In 2005, Alex Flemming – Arte e História, by Roseli Ventrella and Valéria de Souza, was released by the modern publisher.

Critical Commentary

Alex Flemming is initially dedicated to engraving, to photography and painting, making, in 1983, a series of large paintings that have as a reference photographs of vigorous bodies. In 1990, its production is marked by a new orientation: it also starts to carry out interventions, exposing, on the staircase of the São Paulo Museum of Art of São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand (MASP), several stuffed ox heads, painted in metallic blue, fitted in Inverted white garbage cans.

In the early 1990s, he made some series of paintings with an autobiographical character, which support his own clothes. Later, he starts to collect and paint, chairs, armchairs and used sofas, in which he later applies letters, which form texts taken from newspaper news, thus displacing the pre-established relationship with these objects. In Body Builders (2001-2002), he photographs young and slender bodies to then draw, on these images, maps of areas of conflicts and wars, such as, for example, those from the Middle East or the region of Chiapas, in the Mexico.

The use of graphic characters on photographs of people is also present in one of his most outstanding works: the panels of the Sumaré station of the São Paulo Metro. Composed of photos of ordinary people, each one of them was assigned a poem, written in half-blurred letters, with some inverted or absent passages, which does not entirely make it impossible to understand the text.

Criticism

"Artist of the contemporary world, Alex Flemming, although young, already reveals a very mature spirit, translated into his work, all of it a reflection on man, which is evident in the persistence with which he approaches the human body, focused on expansions of the different parts. was linked to the experimentation of new media. (...) His work carries out the integration of artisanal processes with post-industrials. His research always seeks the appropriation of the most advanced means, such as the XVII International Biennial of São Paulo, when he carried out experiments in videotext. Of his paintings is very complex, all of which performed by the artist himself, his photographic enlargements are transformed into huge photoliths ('made by myself', he says) and printed by means of photographic screen printing. In this process, it transforms the erotic aspect into multiple readings, but the organic side persists, which starts to present, in its new dimension, a very intense emotional load".
Ilsa Leal Ferreira
the color and design of Brazil. Paulo: Brazilian Center for Art Projects, 1984.

"In reality, I think that two trajectories intersect in the evolution of Flemming's work in recent years. Around 1983, he elaborated large paintings from photographs of vigorous bodies of living people. Next, it leaves the photograph of models alive and looks for graphic models from past centuries (...). Now the mummies: it retreats more and more in the past, passes from the living body to the relic body, while the figures are simplified by becoming flat, of smooth colors, which are positioned in an ostensible foreground - threatened, however, from the bottom. threatened or not: for, perhaps, the great desire of the figure is to become deep. but a desire against which it is certainly necessary to fight. However, we will go deep and the best that awaits us is to become an inheritance. Alex Flemming works the vacillating space and time between the figure and the background. (...) Flemming's painting is not predominantly conceptual. It seduces me by the visual splendor, its chromatic richness, the sensuality of matter, the tactile effect, the changes in brightness and volume of light that fall on the metallic paint and an indisputable grandiloquence."
Jean-Claude Bernardet
Alex Flemming Lisbon: Temporary Exhibition Galleries/Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, 1988.

"What exists in the Depths of emotion or in the muddles of the unconscious - from within us - to what could perhaps exist outside of us, Alex Flemming takes the material from its creation. It is not by chance that, behind the igneous, contrasting colors, referring to the modernity of the neons, in their grotesque strength, these figures seem at the same time strangely primitive. Like rock drawings, immortalizing incomprehensible alien or tormented (and equally incomprehensible) demons of the mind. Inspired by 17th-century engravings by Ulysses Aldrovandi, Flemming's work - after walking through the human body, by sacred and mythological figures - now finds in these images another line of coherence and evolution. Explicit, huge, aggressively colored and without any intimacy, they symbolically materialize the fantasies for centuries in the human mind. And they bother by threatening us with the materiality of the madness of our own condition."

Alex Flemming and its flying rugs that question West and East

Dismount, deconstruct, undress, peel, scrape, Mixing, Overlaying, Replacing, Redoing, Recovering, Coating, Renaming, Building, Rebuilding, Reusing, Pasting, Replacing, The Art of Paulista Alex Flemming strives for the production in permanent process, in a dense work that explores the extensions and limits of the theme and the material.
A mix of unusual ideas – of indecipherable texts, strange textures, different supports and gaudy paints. A provocative art, made of printed bodies or de-reconstructed bodies, of furniture, objects and clothes Coated with metallic colors, stuffed animals, colorful, etc.

Thinking and composing in series, there is in Alex Flemming's work the concern with doing and documenting the steps, organizing the steps and even showing the production process that, in the screen and in other supports, it sometimes appears in a camouflaged way, sometimes opening itself, in a translation of the world and of itself. Many of these series are recombined in different colors, textures and supports, proposing a range of reading possibilities.

A new concept of beauty? More than that, it is a game between transparency, thickness and what is hidden. And what all this production mirrors is the artist's own trajectory, a volunteer exile.

Living between two chaotic metropolises – São Paulo and Berlin–, Flemming talks about his work in a provocative and passionate way. He tells his concerns and reflections regarding life and death, to political and cultural themes, portrayed in his work in an unconventional way, as if the artistic object, yes, was its link to life, between worlds, countries and themes, in a becoming of the artist and work. A recurrence that art imitates life?

In this artistic nation, the body is a constant subject. Since the 1980s, the artist has portrayed or used the human body, sometimes as a theme, sometimes as a support for the discussion of political, social and cultural themes. identity, such as absence or as memory. Finally, it can be said that Flemming has in the body and its possibilities of meaning and resignification one of its main focuses.

The beauty of the human body is carnally explored on the “torso” screen of 1983. divided into four rectangles, framed by different colors and textures, in a reverence for the living and exuberant body or as an invitation to pleasure, sex and life. Here, as in other works where the denuded figure appears, the artist shows, discusses and honors the body in its physical appearance, in its strength and in the erotic appeal that the nude awakens. of contemporary society, such as the reworked photos of the 2002 series “Body Builders”, in which the artist prints, on the skins of athletic bodies, maps of regions of the world in conflict. elevated, spatialized and carnivally colored, which denounces visually and verbally. In this series of modeled bodies, the contemporaneity of the artist's work appears in the form of his engagement with history, technology and art.

The human body present and in focus also appears in the gigantic photos of anonymous characters, as in the documents bureaucratics, on which the artist splashes colorful letters, which form poems by renowned authors, in a 1998 work.

Mounting billboards at the Sumaré station of the São Paulo Metro, in 44 transparent glass canvases, Flemming prepares a code for the user to decipher what is out of the photos, putting order in their perception. In this series, the artist highlights the faces of the crowd, commenting on social indifferentiation and anonymity.

The body also becomes memory or relic on the 1988 “Mummy” screen. Mummies, from an idea already established culturally, but which is re-elaborated here in a translucent version, permeated by a background of brush strokes in light, ethereal tones. They are three “almost” spiritual figures, suspended on the screen, ready for the reverence of the receiver, either because he is faced with the secrets that the mummy hides, or because of the idea of death and eternity of the body that these figures suggest.

There is still the series of religious bodies. In this series, the artist takes examples of popular religious images and covers them with unusual colors, textures and cutouts. On the 1984 screen “Angel”, for example, Flemming works on eight rectangles that together show the outline of an angel figure. The background and figure are mixed through the strong colors, the colorful brushstrokes and the assembly of the eight parts, composing an overlap of visual information, where the interference creates the new sign.

Flemming is an artist who surrenders to the human body. In a new way of presenting and representing the body, his work takes the physical body as a figure, as an identity, places it on a pedestal and reverences it, either emphasizing it plastically, or transforming it beyond its natural borders, either by expanding or tearing the body. or its parts.

Alex Flemming's body takes on varied identities and may even be absent, as in the series of metallic colored clothes, but it is always beautiful and alive, because it is provocative, diverse, distinct, human. It is a body that leaves the crowd, the social and cultural erasure and becomes the center, theme and work. His most recent work reveals a political engagement. In the unprecedented production “Flying Carpets”, Alex Flemming expresses his indignation in the face of extremist acts, emerging a feeling that is shared by any sensible citizen on the planet.

The inauguration of the exhibition “Flying Carpets”, in the Gallery Sylvio Nery, coincided with the second anniversary of the attacks that overthrew the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York.

Allusion to the ancient oriental flying rugs of the “one thousand and a nights” and the modern technology of Western aeronautics, the gigantic planes built by the artist with pieces of oriental rugs establish the denunciation and recall the East versus West question that so disturbs this beginning of the 21st century.
