Biography

Adir Sodré (Rondonópolis MT 1962)

Pintor, Designer.

In 1977, Adir Sodré de Souza attends the free atelier of the Cultural Foundation from Mato Grosso, where he is guided by Humberto Espíndola (1943) and Dalva (1935). In the following two years, he integrates, with Gervane de Paula (1962) and other artists, a group that seeks to renew the art of Mato Grosso. At that time, he participated in collective exhibitions organized by the Museum of Art and Popular Culture of the Federal University of Mato Grosso - MACP/UFMT. It also participates, among others, in the collectives such as Vai Você, Geração 80?, at the School of Visual Arts of Parque Lage - EAV/Parque Lage, Rio de Janeiro, in 1983, and Modernity, Brazilian Art in the 20th Century, at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, in 1987. In its production it addresses themes related to regional culture and questions about indigenous peoples.

Critical Comment

Adir Sodré has frequented, since 1977, the free workshop of the Cultural Foundation of Mato Grosso, Guided by Humberto Espíndola (1943) and Dalva (1935). In the 1970s, his paintings are a record of everyday life in the popular neighborhoods of Cuiabá and also of the regional landscape. produces works with an irreverent social theme. In works from the later decade, he reveals admiration for the French painter Henri Matisse (1869-1954), using pure colors and decorative elements in works in which eroticism is very present, such as in phallus and flowers (1986) or orgy of fruits. (1987). It also produces portraits of personalities, starting from the faithful reproduction of the physiognomy, but making use of humor.

The artist maintains a constant dialogue with the tradition of art history, and makes references, among others, to the painters Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) and Diego Velázquez (1599-1660). It also approaches the universe of comics, as in lunch on the grass VII (1988). From the 1980s onwards, Adir Sodré included in his thematic works related to indigenous peoples, the invasion caused by tourism in certain regions of Brazil and to consumerism, the latter exemplified in the Dolores Disposable (1984).

Criticism

"(...) Then his laughter turned to a joke, his brute strength took a path, his innocence went on to fight. Things of the savage being civilized according to his own choice. So, in the paintings from 1982 onwards, Adir began to talk about the invaded Indian, the new plague Tourism multinational, which constrains everything with its eyes and exotizing cameras, and from the general races to the evident or secret world of consumerism. A painting of naughty pleasure to leave no one at the convenience of good manners".
