Rodrigo Andrade (São Paulo SP 1962)
Rodrigo Andrade is a painter, engraver and graphic artist. He was born in 1962, in São Paulo, and began his training in engraving in the studio of Sérgio Fingermann, in 1977. The following year, he attended the Studio of Graphics Arts, in Glasgow, Scotland. In 1981, he studied drawing with Carlos Fajardo and, between 1981 and 1982, participated in engraving and painting courses at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, in Paris. Back in Brazil, he joined the Casa 7 group between 1982 and 1985.
In 1984, he participated in the 2nd Salão Paulista de Arte Contemporânea, where he received the Revelation Award. The following year, he participated in the 18th International Biennial of São Paulo and the 8th National Salon of Plastic Arts, in Rio de Janeiro, where he was awarded the Acquisition Award. Art, in São Paulo. Since 1987, he has been a graphic artist in magazines and books, having produced, between 1991 and 1998, covers for Veja magazine. In 1991, he received the Brasília Award for Plastic Arts, granted by the Brasília Museum of Art (MAB). That same year, he participated as a teacher of the project A Produção Reflected, at the Oswald de Andrade Cultural Workshop, in São Paulo. As of 2001, he started teaching courses on contemporary art at the Museum of Modern Art in São Paulo (MAM/SP). 7, performs works that have affinities with the production of German neo-expressionists, and also make reference to the work of the American painter Philip Guston. At that time, Andrade paints large format canvases, with wide and materic brushstrokes and contrasting colors. As the critic Roberto Pontual notes, in his work the figures, objects and scenes, usually from the interiors, suffer a fragmentation that does not hide their existence from them, it only suspends it in the condition of a puzzle, which the look reconstitutes. From 1985 onwards, his painting reveals a gesture that undoes the most evident compositions, carried out previously.
From 1999 onwards, Andrade's production undergoes major changes. It exposes screens in which it has rectangular or circular monochromatic shapes arranged on neutral surfaces. As the critic Adriano Pedrosa points out, his paintings seem simple, but an attentive look realizes that there is something uncomfortable in this apparent simplicity. The arrangement of the shapes, too close to each other or the edges of the screen, the intense chromatic relationships between the colors of the figures and the background, in addition to the paints that flow beyond the delimited area of the figures, reveal a questioning about the tradition of Geometric abstraction. His works allude to graphic signs and signs, present in the urban environment, but emptied of content and messages.
