Luiz Aquila (Rio de Janeiro RJ 1943)
Luiz Aquila is a painter, draftsman, printmaker and teacher. In 1959 and 1960, he took painting classes with Aluísio Carvão and woodcut classes with Oswaldo Goeldi. He moved to Brasília in 1962 and attended courses as a non-degree student at the Instituto de Arte e Arquitetura of the Universidade de Brasília (UnB). In 1965, he received a French government grant and went to live at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. That same year, he traveled to Lisbon, where he worked at the Sociedade de Gravadores Portugueses [Society of Portuguese Printmakers]. He remained in Europe until 1968, when he returned to Brazil and began teaching drawing and visual arts at UnB, a post he held until 1972. He then went to London and studied printmaking at the Slade School of Fine Art.
In 1978, he coordinated the Centro de Criatividade de Brasília [Brasília Creativity Center], a project of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco), and exhibited at the 27th Venice Biennale. From 1979 to 1986, he taught painting at the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage (EAV/Parque Lage) in Rio de Janeiro, a period in which he played a significant role in training the young artists of the Geração 80 [1980s Generation]. In 1988, he became director of the institution, a post he held until 1990.
He took part in the 17th, 18th and 20th editions of the Bienal Internacional de São Paulo [São Paulo International Biennial], held in 1983, 1985 and 1989. In 1988, he moved to Petrópolis, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. In 1992 the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro (MAM/RJ) and in 1993 the Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand (MASP) held retrospective exhibitions of his work.
Critical Commentary
Luiz Aquila began to define his painting in the 1970s with works on paper linked to informal abstraction, in which gesture is combined with geometry. As the critic Casimiro Xavier de Mendonça notes, the canvases of the 1980s are highly elaborate, with well-defined spaces, and the artist starts from an intimate point of departure. In these works he reconciles organic and inorganic forms, creating pieces that evoke something close to an aerial survey of the landscape.
His large canvases are marked by overlapping masses of color and transparencies on vibrant surfaces, an effect achieved through the rhythm of the brushstrokes. In his work of the late 1980s, the artist shows a concern with horizontality and creates visual effects that seem to extend from canvas to canvas, like continuous themes reworked in different nuances.
Luiz Aquila's work gained great prominence throughout the 1980s, when he held several exhibitions. Through his artistic output and also his role as director and teacher at the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage - EAV/Parque Lage, in Rio de Janeiro, he is regarded as one of the great champions of and a reference for a group of artists known as the Geração 80, associated with the revaluation of painting in opposition to the conceptual art current that had a stronger presence in Brazil in the 1970s.
Critiques
"When Luiz Áquila began to define his painting in the early 1970s, the Brazilian eye had already lost the habit of cultivating quality painting, in which it is not the first visual impact that counts and one must discover the handwriting and quality of the brushstroke, of the matter and texture of the picture. The fact is that at the time the vast majority of Brazilian production was sailing in other directions. Aquila remained faithful to highly elaborate yet quite emotional canvases; his starting point is always introspective, and even when the space is well defined, the brushstrokes are free and loose. This consistency and his teaching activity turned him into a point of reference for a generation of young people who wished to rediscover the quality of painting".

"Áquila's painting, which has been described as a kind of tropical informalism and as an aerial survey of the landscape, is characterized by vibrant color and by the play of tensions between forms that do not arise at random on the surface of the picture but rather balance and complete one another. Patches of color and zigzag lines coexist on these enormous supports, in which one can sometimes make out remnants of objects, suggestions of landscape and even fragmented organic forms".

"Áquila, who has a highly trained eye, likes to say that this eye is always on duty, discriminating, selecting, ranking. What he does, all the time, is transform these everyday sensations - colors, forms, textures, temperatures, sounds and smells - into painting. He knows art history and asks us to know it too, but he does not paint in theory, nor does he turn each picture into a riddle to be solved. He also seeks the freshness of ideas and sensations.
So when he tells us, with a touch of irony, that he is analyzing the conditions for painting, or that he is in conversation with painting, we can accept as true these statements contained in the titles of his canvases. Aquila tries to keep his creative process open, subject to change, the picture fluid, in progress. The picture comes into being right there, in hand-to-hand engagement with the material from which he builds his painting, in an active and intelligent dialogue".
