Biography

Luiz Aquila (Rio de Janeiro RJ 1943)

Luiz Aquila is a painter, draftsman, engraver and teacher. In 1959 and 1960, he took painting classes with Aluísio charcoal and woodcut with Oswaldo Goeldi. He moved to Brasília in 1962 and attended courses as a free student at the Institute of Art and Architecture of the University of Brasília (UnB). In 1965, he received a scholarship from the French government and resided at Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. That same year, he traveled to Lisbon, where he worked at the Society of Portuguese Recorders. He remained in Europe until 1968, when he returned to Brazil and started to work as a teacher of drawing and plastic at UnB, a role he held until 1972. Then he went to London and studied engraving at the Slade School of Fine. Arts.

In 1978, he coordinated the Brasília Center for Creativity, a project of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and exhibited at the 27th Biennial of Venice. From 1979 to 1986, he taught painting at the School of Visual Arts of Parque Lage (EAV/Parque Lage), in Rio de Janeiro, a period in which he played a significant role in the training of young artists of the 80th generation. It occupied until 1990.

Participated in the 17th, 18th and 20th International Biennial of São Paulo, held in 1983, 1985 and 1989. In 1988, He moved to Petrópolis, in Rio de Janeiro. In 1992, the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro (MAM/RJ) and, in 1993, the Museum of Art of São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand (MASP) held retrospective shows of his work.

Commentary Critic

Luiz Aquila begins to define his painting in the 1970s, when performing works on paper, linked to informal abstraction, in which gestuality is associated with geometry. As the critic Casimiro Xavier de Mendonça notes, the canvases of the 1980s are very elaborate, with well-defined spaces, and the artist has an intimate starting point. In these works, it reconciles organic and inorganic forms, and creates works that evoke almost an aerophotogrammetry of the landscape.

In its large canvases, the superpositions of color masses and transparencies stand out, on vibrant surfaces, whose effect is obtained by the rhythm of the brushstrokes. In the production of the late 1980s, the artist reveals concern about horizontality and creates visual effects that seem to be prolonged from canvas to canvas, such as continuous themes, reworked in different nuances.

The work of Luiz Aquila obtains great prominence throughout the decade. 1980, when he held several exhibitions. For his artistic production and also for his acting as director and professor at the School of Visual Arts of Parque Lage - EAV/Parque Lage, in Rio de Janeiro, he is considered one of the great supporters and a reference for a group of artists known as Geração 80, linked to the revaluation of painting, as opposed to Conceptual art, which has a greater presence in Brazil in the 1970s.

Criticism

"When Luiz Áquila began to define his painting, in the early 1970s, the Brazilian look had already lost the reference of cultivar A quality painting, where it is not the first visual impact that counts, where it is necessary to discover the spelling and quality of the brush stroke, the matter and texture of the painting. Elaborated, but quite emotional, their starting point is always introspective and even if the space is well defined, the brush strokes are free and loose. Such coherence and its didactic activity made it become a reference pole for a generation of young people who wanted to discover the quality of the painting again".
Casimiro Xavier de Mendonça
Mendonça, Casimiro Xavier de. [text]. In: Galeria Montesanti. The presence of painting: Catalog. Aerophotogrammetry of the landscape, is characterized by vibrant chromatism and the play of tensions between forms that do not arise at random on the surface of the frame, but rather balance and complete each other. Color spots and zigzagging lines coexist in these huge supports, in which one can sometimes guess remains of objects, landscape suggestions and even fragmented organic shapes".
José Roberto Teixeira Leite
LEITE, José Roberto Teixeira. Critical Dictionary of Painting in Brazil. Rio de Janeiro: Artlivre, 1988.

"Aquila, who has a very trained eye, often says that this eye is always in service, discriminating, selecting, ranking. What he does, all the time, is to transform these everyday sensations - chromaticisms, formalisms, tactiles, temperatures, sounds and olfactories - into painting. He knows and asks us to know the history of art, but he does not paint in theory, nor does he transform each painting into a riddle to be deciphered. He also seeks the freshness of ideas and sensations.

Thus, when he tells us, with a hint of irony, that he is analyzing the conditions for painting, or that he is in conversations with the painting, we can accept as true these statements contained in the titles of his screens. Aquila seeks to keep its creation process open, subject to change, the fluent framework, in progress. The picture is born there, in the melee with the matter with which he builds his painting, in an active and intelligent dialogue".
