José Moraes (Rio de Janeiro RJ 1921 - São Paulo SP 2003)
Pintor, sculptor, engraver and illustrator. of Fine Arts - ENBA, in Rio de Janeiro. In parallel with university studies, he has painting classes with Quirino Campofiorito (1902-1993). In 1942, he became assistant to Candido Portinari (1903-1962), in Brodosqui, and, in 1945, he worked with Portinari in the execution of the panel of the Chapel of São Francisco de Assis, by the architect Oscar Niemeyer (1907 - 2012), in Belo Horizonte. In the same year, he presents his first solo, at the Institute of Architects of Brazil - IAB/RJ, in Rio de Janeiro. It is awarded, in the 1940s, in four editions of the National Salon of Fine Arts - SNBA. With the Travel Abroad Award, received at the 55th National Salon of Fine Arts of 1949, he travels to Italy, where he remains from 1950 to 1951 studying mural painting. Back in Rio de Janeiro, he dedicates himself to the execution of mosaics and frescoes until 1958, when he moved to São Paulo. In 1967, he became a professor at the Armando Álvares Penteado Foundation - FAAP. In 1971, he perfected himself in serigraphy with Michel Caza, in Paris, where he returned on three other occasions, with the same purpose. He also does internships in lithography with Michel Potier, at the École de Beaux-Arts, Paris, and with Eugène Shenker, at the Center in Gravure Contemporaine, Geneva.
Criticism
"José Moraes has always sought to base his work on solid foundations, and face, since the beginning of the 1940s, the contradictions common to most Brazilian artists. He sought the bridge between the European pictorial tradition and our present here. figuration as a starting point, and remained faithful to it until today, despite having been exposed to all the information regarding the main movements of the last decades".

"... It is necessary to emphasize, however, that the vigor of his work is present in all the series he pursued with resolute dominion. In his paintings are techniques, colors and, especially, that 'it' of whom it is decided for the easel to create a work of art. Here it is not a question of meditating the struggle (which does not exist) between figurativeism and abstractionism. Art, good achievement prevails, which is indeed valid".

"From the thematic point of view, José Moraes (who has always remained faithful to the figurativeness of his youth in Rio de Janeiro) practiced the landscape, the figure (including portraits), compositions and still-natures. Strongly influenced at the beginning (...) by Cândido Portinari, he also suffered the impact of the art of Lasar Segall, on the occasion of his exhibition at the National Museum of Fine Arts, in 1943, in which he appreciated above all the articulation of forms, obtained through elaborated modulations of color, and the suffering social theme. Influence to hover over all the others was however that of Cézanne, already visible in the 1943 series of Nus, and which is accentuated around 1945. One of his most admirable paintings It's even called a tribute to Cézanne, it's from 1945 and shows a corner of a studio, with apples enveloped in a characteristic Cezannian space, seeing on the right an easel corner and, behind it, a portrait of Cézanne, and in the background the landscape, through an open window. The Cezannian note is still intense in the landscape of Bagé, from 1946, mixing, towards the end of the decade, a growing realism (Black Model, 1949), and reappearing, attenuated, about ten years later. Finally, from the 1960s onwards, the artist gradually articulated a more personal language, especially compositions with objects and in the numerous landscapes of Embu".

"(...) of the week of 22 and of Portinari I only learned in the Master Campofiorite's classes. It was something unknown that surprised. Other wonders came and in this world I entered still timid and soon exaggeratedly participant. the Great Exhibition Portinari; The fantastic show of 100 years of French art and the ?discovery? of Cezanne and with it the meaning of the painting. To this all was added the knowledge and friendship, a long friendship, of Portinari. Portinari said that the pleasure of painting is almost visceral. He painted whistling with content. (...) I enjoy the act of painting, not moving those on the other side - the spectator - and teaching those who want to know".
