Biography

Ivan Marquetti (Rio de Janeiro RJ 1941 - Ouro Preto MG 2004)

Ivan Marquetti was a painter, draftsman and printmaker. He was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1941 and studied printmaking and drawing at the Instituto de Belas Artes da Guanabara from 1958 to 1961. In 1962, he settled in Ouro Preto (MG), where he developed a body of work focused on the urban landscape of the historic towns of Minas Gerais, as well as painting still lifes and flowers. His style combined the vibrant palette of Fauvism with Expressionism, notable for its straight lines and bold textures applied with a palette knife.

From 1963 to 1964, he lived in Paris, taking an advanced course. Back in Brazil, he divided his time among cities such as Cabo Frio, Olinda, Rio de Janeiro, Ouro Preto and Diamantina. In 1967, he founded the Grupo de Serigrafia [Silkscreen Group] in Rio de Janeiro. From 1971 on, he held solo exhibitions in state capitals such as Recife, Brasília, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

Between 1979 and 1981, he traveled by boat to the source of the Rio Negro, painting the forests and rivers of the Amazon. He described his work, marked by expressive color, as an attempt to capture the essence of landscapes rather than represent them literally. He died in Ouro Preto in 2004.
