Biography

Gonçalo Ivo (Rio de Janeiro RJ 1958)

Gonçalo Ivo is a painter, aquarellist, designer, illustrator and engraver. Son of the writer Lêdo Ivo (1924), he had the opportunity to live with writers and artists since childhood. In 1973, he attended the studios of artists Augusto Rodrigues, Abelardo Zaluar (1924-1987) and Iberê Camargo (1914-1994). In 1975, he studied painting at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro (MAM/RJ), under the guidance of Aluísio Carvão (1920-2001) and Sérgio Campos Melo. Graduated in Architecture from Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF), he worked as a professor at the Department of Educational Activities at MAM/RJ between 1984 and 1986, in addition to a visiting professor at the School of Fine Arts of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (EBA/UFRJ) in 1986.

He also worked as an illustrator and visual programmer for the publishers Global, Record and Pine Press. Throughout his career, he held several individual and collective exhibitions, both in Brazil and abroad. In 2000, he made the scene for the program Metrópolis, on TV Cultura. In the same year, he moved with his family to Paris, where he set up his studio.

Critiques

"(...) we can place Gonçalo Ivo, João Magalhães, Carlo Mascarenhas and Livia Flores as members of a group of new artists who seek their sources of inspiration directly from the lyrical abstractionism (João Magalhães) and in the sensitive geometry (Gonçalo Ivo and Carlo Mascarenhas) of the 1950s. A contemplative and formal 'sensitivity' unites these works that transit in the peculiar spiritual and lyrical atmosphere of the 1950s. However, we cannot stick only to this aspect in the work of these four artists. Geometrical distortions of Carlo Mascarenhas' sculptures introduce a biting humor note, foreign to the theoretical concerns of previous generations, dissolving in a certain way the rigorous contours that guided their theoretical-artistic practices. In the case of the three artists we can talk about A neo-abstractionism (lyrical or concrete, does not matter) that is reborn in the 80s (...)".

Generation 80: Núcleo Jovem Mp2 Art. Presentation by Jorge Guinle. Rio de Janeiro: MP2 Arte, 1984.

"Gonçalo Ivo is an artist substantially in tune with the 1980s carapace. Not because his career has debuted with an individual at the exact moment of the opening of the decade and proceeded with an intense step throughout it, marking it with each advance with a little more secure statement of language. Nor is it justified to define it by a possible militancy in the explicit ranks of the so-called generation *), whose youthful stings reignited momentarily the agoras of the galleries and the bins of the newspapers: in this regard, he preferred the silence of the margin, already warned that his affiliation to the time then corresponded to less epidermal and tonitruating motifs. PONTUAL, Roberto. "A painting of pleasure and modesty". In: Gonçalo Ivo. Rio de Janeiro: Galeria Saramenha, 1990.

"(...) The taste for manipulation of matter feeds its painting made of alchemical mutation. The profusion of possibilities exists in the economic use of resources. It works extensive series, both in watercolor and in oil. They are experimental sequences, where closely conjugated line and color articulate infinity rhythms to infinity. Each work is a segment of a hypothetical set because it always It can be magnified. The flow of language is well exemplified in the watercolor books where stains and graphics replace words. Gonçalo Ivo's painting is inserted in the modern tradition, in the language that dates back to Cézanne and Braque and in the Brazil, has in Volpi a paradigm: the plastic construction impregnated with a sensed reality.
