Gonçalo Ivo (Rio de Janeiro RJ 1958)
Gonçalo Ivo is a painter, watercolorist, draftsman, illustrator and printmaker. The son of the writer Lêdo Ivo (1924), he had the opportunity to mix with writers and artists from childhood. In 1973, he attended the studios of the artists Augusto Rodrigues, Abelardo Zaluar (1924-1987) and Iberê Camargo (1914-1994). In 1975, he studied painting at the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro (MAM/RJ), under Aluísio Carvão (1920-2001) and Sérgio Campos Melo. A graduate in architecture from the Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF), he taught in the Department of Educational Activities at MAM/RJ between 1984 and 1986, and was a visiting professor at the Escola de Belas Artes of the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (EBA/UFRJ) in 1986.
He also worked as an illustrator and graphic designer for the publishers Global, Record and Pine Press. Throughout his career, he has held numerous solo and group exhibitions in Brazil and abroad. In 2000, he designed the set for the TV Cultura program Metrópolis. That same year, he moved with his family to Paris, where he set up his studio.
Critiques
"(...) We can place Gonçalo Ivo, João Magalhães, Carlo Mascarenhas and Livia Flores as members of a group of new artists who draw their sources of inspiration directly from the lyrical abstraction (João Magalhães) and the sensitive geometry (Gonçalo Ivo and Carlo Mascarenhas) of the 1950s. A contemplative, formal 'sensibility' unites these works, which move within the peculiar spiritual and lyrical atmosphere of the 1950s. However, we cannot limit ourselves to this aspect alone in the work of these four artists. The aggressive wooden support of Gonçalo Ivo's paintings contrasts with the lyrical forms placed upon it, and the geometric distortions of Carlo Mascarenhas's sculptures introduce a note of biting humor, foreign to the theoretical concerns of earlier generations, dissolving to some extent the rigorous outlines that guided their theoretical and artistic practices. In the case of the three artists, we can speak of a neo-abstraction (lyrical or concrete, it hardly matters) reborn in the 1980s (...)."

"Gonçalo Ivo is an artist substantially attuned to the shell of the 1980s. Not because his career debuted with a solo show at the very moment the decade opened and continued at an intense pace throughout it, marking each step forward with a slightly more assured affirmation of language. Nor is it justified to define him so because of any possible militancy in the explicit ranks of the so-called Geração 80, whose youthful ardor momentarily rekindled the agoras of the galleries and the pigeonholes of the newspapers: in this respect, he preferred the silence of the margin, already aware that his affiliation with the time corresponded to less skin-deep and thunderous motives. "(...) A taste for handling matter feeds his painting, made of alchemical mutation. The insistent exploration of subtle structural and chromatic variations does not seek to exhaust, but to confirm the profusion of possibilities that exists in an economical use of means. He works in extensive series, both in watercolor and in oil. They are experimental sequences in which closely combined line and color articulate rhythms that can unfold infinitely. Each work is a segment of a hypothetical whole, since it can always be extended. The flow of language is well exemplified in the books of watercolors in which patches and marks replace words. Gonçalo Ivo's painting belongs to the modern tradition, to the language that goes back to Cézanne and Braque and that, in Brazil, has Volpi as its paradigm: plastic construction imbued with a sensed reality.
