Frank Schaeffer (1917 - 2008)
Painter, Designer, Engraver, Illustrator, Teacher.
He received his first art training studying painting with Wlazek, in Rio de Janeiro. Then he left for Vienna, where he studied drawing with Grom-Rrottmeier. In the 1940s he was back in Brazil, graduating an engineer in 1943 from the National School of Engineering of the former University of Brazil. Steiner. Returning to Europe between 1948 and 1949, he carried out studies with Fernand Léger, André Lhote, Robert Cami and Ducos de la Haille.
Then, he developed an active career in the country and abroad. He illustrated the books Guerra e Paz, by Leon Tolstoy, Russian Tales and São Jorge de Ilhéus, by Jorge Amado, and Poetic Anthology, by Augusto Frederico Schmidt. In 1960 he received the Jabuti Award as the best national illustrator. It also has an extensive work in painting, of an expressionist nature, moving from abstraction to figuration, and present in several national and foreign collections, with emphasis on landscapes and portraits.
“Frank Schaeffer is an expressionist painter, Practicing an art of figurative nature that, despite the variations obviously determined by the passage of years, in essence has always remained true to itself.” (LEITE, José Roberto Teixeira (Org.), 1988:464). A renowned Brazilian painter, who was also an engineer, draftsman and professor. Mineiro de Belo Horizonte, was born in 1917, studied painting with the Hungarian artist Arprad Szene.
He was invited by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Norway to hold several exhibitions in that country and give lectures on the arts of Brazil. He was a teacher, illustrated covers of books by famous writers, created panels for institutions and was awarded several awards. He traveled throughout Europe and several American countries. In 1971, wrote Quirino Campofiorito: - “Frank Shaeffer occupies a very special place in Brazilian art, without joining currents or trends, without belonging to groups, he is respected by everyone, for his integrity, competence and his activities as a true professional. He held individual exhibitions and participated in press conferences in salons since 1941 in Brazil, France, England, Norway, United States, Austria, Peru and Argentina.
Participated in the São Paulo, Barcelona and Mexico Biennials.
Participated of the salons of fine arts and modern art in Rio and other states.
It has an extensive work in painting, of an expressionist nature, moving from abstraction to figuration, and present in several national and foreign collections, with emphasis on the landscapes and Portraits.
