Biography

Armando Moral Sendin (Rio de Janeiro RJ 1925 - Marbella, Espanha 2020)

Armando Sendin was a painter, ceramist, sculptor, draftsman, printmaker and teacher. He devoted much of his life to study: he attended the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Priego, Spain, around 1940; studied philosophy at the Universidade de São Paulo from 1945 to 1949; specialized in aesthetics with Bogumil Jasinowski at the Universidad de Chile in 1950; and, on a French government scholarship, studied aesthetics at the Sorbonne under Souriau from 1950 to 1953. During his travels, he worked with Gensoli at the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres, in France, and did research with the ceramist Zuloaga, as well as studying ceramic techniques of Eastern origin with Guardiola and González Martí in Spain.

From 1954 to 1964, he taught painting, ceramics, sculpture and drawing in his studio in São Paulo. In that city, he held his first solo exhibition in 1960, at the Clube dos Artistas. In 1965, he published the textbook Cerâmica Artística [Art Ceramics]. In 1982, he received the Ribeiro Couto Prize as the visual arts highlight of the year.

Critiques

"It is the spectacle of the street, more precisely the world of men, of everyday life, that attracts Armando Sendin's keen perception. It is therefore reality, seemingly objectified at first glance, that drives his gaze and energy toward what appearances seem to be and not to be. But this reality, experienced more in appearance than in likeness, despite the fidelity expressed, implies an objectification of the world rather than a bland inventory. Indeed, none of the subjects he treats, most often in cycles, is without intention. Without apparent pretension, and with their inevitable social resonances, they transcend the banal existence of daily life. (...) In this iconography, patiently observed and staged by an artist in full command of his means, we finally note the rejection of the industrial world, of technology, of closed and empty universes, of an aggressive humanity. Armando Sendin preferred to express in his own way - to borrow from Bachelard - the 'intimate immensity' of beings, things and nature. That is why, beyond the meticulous work and the demands of the hand, his painting conveys an impression at once playful, grave and comforting".
