Ana Maria Pacheco (Goiânia GO 1943)
Ana Maria Pacheco is a sculptor, painter, draftswoman and printmaker. She graduated in sculpture from the Universidade Católica de Goiás and in music from the Universidade Federal de Goiás. In 1965, she completed her postgraduate studies in music and education in Rio de Janeiro and, between 1966 and 1969, taught at the Instituto de Educação de Goiás. During this period, she also taught at the School of Fine Arts of the Faculty of Architecture of the Universidade de Goiás and at the Art Institute of the Universidade Federal de Goiás.
With a scholarship granted by the British Council in Rio de Janeiro, Ana Maria Pacheco moved to London, where she studied at the Slade School of Fine Art from 1973 to 1975. Her international career was consolidated when, between 1985 and 1989, she held the post of Head of Fine Art at the Norwich School of Art, in Norfolk, England. In 1996, she was appointed Associate Artist of the National Gallery, in London, and served as a visiting professor at several universities in Scotland, England and Northern Ireland.
Her academic recognition is extensive: she received honorary doctorates in letters from the University of East Anglia in 2000 and in philosophy from Anglia Polytechnic University in 2002, both in the United Kingdom. Ana Maria Pacheco has held important solo exhibitions, such as at the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes, in Rio de Janeiro, in 2000, and at the Purdy Hicks Gallery, in London, as well as at the Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, in Brighton, in 2004. With works in collections in Brazil, England, Germany, Japan and the United States, she has lived and worked in England since 1973.

"Her work, in fact, has a double connection: one in time, uniting the archaic with the contemporary, the other in space, uniting the local with the wider spatial and territorial context. Having lived for so long in London, a strategic point from which to glimpse the artistic horizon, she not only masters the perception of contemporary culture but manages to engage with that context of great competition and rivalry without being absorbed by it, maintaining the originality and authenticity that bind her not only to the Brazilian sphere but, more broadly, to the whole complex basis of the origins of our culture, through the dimension of black African cultures and of indigenous cultures, not only Brazilian but of the American continent as a whole, including pre-Columbian ones.
And in this sense there is another singularity in Ana Maria Pacheco: her erudition is quite unusual in a visual artist. Her knowledge of history, literature, poetry and iconographic tradition has a breadth and rigor that give her extraordinary versatility in working with different artistic resources, languages and syntaxes".
