Regina Silveira (Porto Alegre RS 1939)
Regina Silveira is one of the most important artists of Brazilian contemporary art, internationally recognized for her performance as a multimedia artist, record company, painter and teacher. Its trajectory stands out for its solid academic background and intense teaching activity, fundamental aspects to consolidate its relevance in the Brazilian and international art scene.
Regina Silveira completed her Bachelor of Arts in 1959 by the Institute of Arts of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. (IA/UFRGS), where he studied with important masters, including Aldo Locatelli and Ado Malagoli. Regina Silveira also obtained a degree in drawing from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), expanding her training in the field of visual arts.
Regina Silveira deepened her artistic training in the early 1960s in the free studio. of the Porto Alegre City Hall, where he took classes with outstanding artists such as Iberê Camargo, Francisco Stockinger and Marcelo Grassmann. In 1967, Regina Silveira received a scholarship from the Hispanic Institute of Culture to study at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of Madrid, an experience that expanded her theoretical repertoire and insertion in the international artistic circuit.
Regina Silveira was invited, in 1969, teaching at the University of Puerto Rico, starting an important stage in his academic career. Upon returning to Brazil, in 1973, Regina Silveira took over the coordination of the engraving sector of the Armando Álvares Penteado Foundation (FAAP), a position she held until 1985 and that reinforced her influence on the formation of new generations of Brazilian artists.
Regina Silveira joined, in 1974, the faculty of the School of Communications and Arts of the University of São Paulo (ECA/USP), where she developed a significant part of her academic research. Regina Silveira obtained the title of Master in 1980 and completed her doctorate in 1984, strengthening her performance both in the field of artistic production and in the university environment.
Regina Silveira resided in New York between 1991 and 1994 with Scholarships awarded by internationally prestigious institutions such as the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and the Fulbright Foundation. In 1995, Regina Silveira was a resident artist at the Civitella Ranieri Foundation and, in 2000, received the Sergio Motta Cultural Award, one of the most relevant Brazilian recognitions in the area of art and technology.
Regina Silveira Throughout his career, he consolidated himself as a central figure in Brazilian contemporary art. Regina Silveira stands out for the articulation between artistic practice, research and teaching, in addition to her expressive projection in the international circuit of the visual arts. of visual representation, marked by dialogues with important artistic matrices of the 20th century. According to the critic Tadeu Chiarelli, the poetics of Regina Silveira was deeply influenced by the contact with the work of Iberê Camargo, of whom she absorbed the understanding of the technique as a means — and not as an end —, in addition to a critical stance in the face of crystallized representation codes.
Another fundamental reference for Regina Silveira is Marcel Duchamp, whose work allows the artist, through irony, to subvert and reinvent such codes, expanding their possibilities of meaning. This approach to Duchampian thought is evident in works such as In Absentia M.D. (1983), in which Regina Silveira paints on the ground magnified shadows of Duchamp's iconic works, starting from the physical absence of objects and their pedestals. voids.
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Regina Silveira developed sculptures and serigraphs still linked to the geometric-constructive tradition. In Labyrinths (1971), he begins investigations with geometric meshes and perspective systems. In the Middle Class & CO (1971–1972), addresses the fragmentation of the individual in contemporary society, introducing a critical dimension that will become recurring in his work.
The appropriation of photographic images becomes a central procedure in the practice of Regina Silveira, expanding the dimension semantics of their work. In offset printed photomontages, conceived as simulacrums of postcards — as in the series Brasil Today: Natural Beauties (1977) — the artist contrasts images of urban landmarks and landscapes recognizable to elements of degradation, such as rubble and car cemeteries, tensioning the symbolic construction of the Brazilian landscape.
Across its trajectory, Regina Silveira incorporates various technologies and media, including heliography, microfilm, xerox, electronic panels, video art, videotext and mail art, reaffirming its pioneering role in experimenting with new media in the context of Brazilian art.
In Anamorphas (1980), Regina Silveira deepens her investigation into the subversion of perspective, starting from photographs of everyday objects that are redesigned with distortions — compressions, dilations and folds —, destabilizing the viewer's perception. In Simulacros (1984), the artist creates shadows from invented projections, in which the generating object is absent, establishing conceptual relationships with Dadaism and Surrealism.
The use of the shadow as an absence index becomes a central element in the work of Regina Silveira, proposing a reflection on the limits of representation and its relationship with perception. This investigation expands into the exhibition and architectural space, when the artist starts to intervene directly on walls and floors with silhouettes shaded in paint or latex.
Works such as Vertex (1994) and Ladder Inexplicable II (1999) explore the relationship between image and architecture, creating illusions of depth and spatial instability. In more recent productions, Regina Silveira expands her performance to the urban space, using vinyl and luminous projections on building facades. In Lumen (2002), he investigates light and its visual multiplication, evoking effects similar to those of a kaleidoscope.
Regina Silveira's work is also articulated with social and political issues, addressing themes such as power — in Monudentro (1987) and The Saint's Paradox (1994) —, violence — in Encuentro (1991) — and the social role of women — in a tea cart (1986).
In addition to her artistic production, Regina Silveira plays a fundamental role in the formation of New generations of artists in Brazil, having influenced names such as Ana Maria Tavares, Rafael França, Mônica Nador and Iran do Espírito Santo.
Criticisms
"With inflections, Regina Silveira seeks a way to dialogue and review some Assumptions of the grammars of vision and therefore conducts an eminently plastic research The interactive and conventional advertisements of furniture stores are the starting point for the construction of a series of unusual objects, which advance in space in all directions (...). If, through the emergence of this 'degenerative', transformative power, the inflections seem to respond to the objectual proposal of surrealism, Regina Silveira's intention is, however, not metaphorical. (...) Testing the power of containment of contours, Regina Silveira takes the perspectic system to its maximum limit. It multiplies the views, of escape, of distance, which destroy the perspective from within, but does not renounce it at all. It adds a new perspective, usually curved, to the frontality of advertising images (...). Personal design or antidesign, the tension of inflections refers to a vector of mutation, of instability, of 'uncertainty', to a structural 'disharmony', (...) tangible sign of that 'disordering of the order' that Regina Silveira proposes from The Anamorphs".

"In the specific case of Regina Silveira, the maturation of her poetics seems to have been determined by the contact with the work of two artists apparently opposed by the postures they took in their trajectories: Iberê Camargo and Marcel Duchamp.
of the First (of whom the artist was a student in Porto Alegre), Regina Silveira would have apprehended her existential anguish of background, which led her to break with her initial conception of art based on an extremely rigid, conservative learning. He also absorbed him by looking at technique as a means and not an end, finally, Camargo seems to have made her doubt for the first time of the codes of representation crystallized by tradition.
From the contact with the work of Duchamp (occurred in the years 70), Regina Silveira realized that the way to the maturation of her poetics was to recover, in critical key, those codes previously despised, reinventing them, to remove other possibilities of meaning from them. He became aware that art could be not only the emanation of the artist's anguish before the world, but rather an organized system full of rules to be put in check by the artist.
Regina Silveira brought as healthy residues from her Experience with Iberê Camargo The sombre tone of his works, the taste for the expressive deformation of signs, the unrestricted distrust of the effectiveness, nowadays, of art and its institutionalized codes. With Duchamp, this distrust was transformed into relentless irony, into bitterness aimed at the destabilization of crystallized concepts of art."
Tadeu Chiarelli
CHIARELLI, Tadeu. Artist and Advisor. in: MORAES, Angélica de (org.). Regina Silveira: Cartographies of the Shadow. Regina Silveira, the shadow follows the Platonic assumptions and indicates the possibility of transposing the real to the represented. The impasse is accentuated by the exploration of what Leonardo da Vinci called marginal aberrations of perspective, that is, the universe of distortions born in the wake of apparently exact geometric procedures. (...)
The vigorous subjectivity of the expressionist root, exercised explicitly by the painter and record company at the beginning of his career, is something that immediately comes to the mind of those who observe his creation process. The moment the idea is just the line of the pencil on the paper, it gives the rein loose the intuition. Shadows are not obtained from calculations. These are only summoned after the resolution responds to the intended content and only to transfer this arbitrary cartography to the plan (drawings, engravings, tapestries and cutouts) or to the space (objects and installations). The artist destroys and rebuilds the possible look at something before using the ruler and the vanishing points that will aim for the spectator for the demonstrated image and its set of corollary visions. (...)
Regina Silveira chose this tool because it meets the needs of symbolic articulation, allowing to manipulate one of the foundations on which the notion of reality represented still rests. Perspective is a fulcrum of the illusory. By exploring contemporary themes with deformations born on the fantastic margins of perspectivist rigor, the artist promotes the union of formal mannerist assumptions with the sophisticated framework of ideas enunciated by conceptual art".

MORAES, Angélica de (Org.). Regina Silveira: Cartographies of the Shadow. São Paulo: Edusp, 1996.
"The simulacra (1982-1984), who succeeded Anamorphos, complete the key points of reference in their language. It is a constellation of photographic works, installations and always monochromatic objects (black on white), reverberating among themselves, which she considers as 'a reflection on the representation of projected shadows, materialized as a parodic visuality of the projective codes of the linear perspective, of the theory of shadows, photography and topographical drawing´. In the establishment of visual structures based on the violation of the laws of artificial representation created as searches for the accuracy of the projective codes of the classical perspective, it was of interest, above all, the use of points of view and the angles of vision.
Notwithstanding the homogeneity of the establishment of all his work focused on the ambiguities of perspective (and in which the 'motives' or objects that serve as a model do not matter), we would emphasize among the simulacra the installation in absentia (MD), built in a space of 10 x 20 m at the São Paulo International Biennial, in 1983, consisting of the monumental silhouettes of Bottlerack and Bicycle Wheel, stretched in oblique opposition on the floor and the elevation of panels that closed the environment. They were fictitious shadows that illusorily started from two bases of sculpture that were absolutely empty and distorted, defying perception according to the distance points of the gaze."

Testimations
"I never considered myself a record label, because the idea of specialization in a single expressive medium bothers me. I'm also not interested in the engraving itself. Artist is an expert in visual languages. Engraving is just one of the means in which these languages can be exercised. The history of art is there to remind us that the great engravers were also designers and painters. My multimedia posture is based on the possibilities of building something from graphic images from different origins, on the most diverse graphic procedures. I've always used and mixed screen printing without prejudice, off set, heliography, xerox and even traditional techniques such as lithogravure. Everything that deals with reproducibility interests me, just as I am interested in the printed image".
