Poty Lazzarotto (Curitiba PR 1924 - Idem 1998)
Poty Lazzarotto was a recorder, designer, illustrator, muralist and teacher. In 1942, he moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he studied painting at the National School of Fine Arts (ENBA). He attended the engraving course taught by Carlos Oswald (1882–1971) at the Lyceum of Arts and Crafts in Rio de Janeiro. In 1946, he traveled to Paris, where he stayed for a year. In the French capital, he studied lithography at the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, with a scholarship granted by the French government. plastics, where he started teaching drawing and engraving. In the same period, he organized the first engraving course at the São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand Art Museum (MASP). During the 1950s, he promoted engraving courses in several Brazilian cities, such as Curitiba, Salvador and Recife.
From the 1960s onwards, he gained prominence as a muralist, executing works in public and private buildings both in Brazil and abroad. He also had a significant role as an illustrator of literary works by renowned authors such as Jorge Amado, Graciliano Ramos, Euclides da Cunha and Dalton Trevisan, among others. He published the books about figurines, in 1986, and Curitiba, of us, in 1989, the latter in partnership with Valêncio Xavier Niculitcheff.
Among his most emblematic murals are that of Casa do Brasil, in Paris, held in 1950, and the panel of the Latin America Memorial, in São Paulo, carried out in 1988. From the 1980s onwards, several publications began to be released about his work, such as Poty Illustrator, by Antônio Houaiss (1915–1999), in 1988; Poty: trails, trails and traces, by Valêncio Xavier Niculitcheff, in 1994; and Poty: the lyricism of the 90s, by Regina Casillo, in 2000.
Critical Commentary
Poty has an extensive graphic work, having initially performed several comic books and illustrated books by several national authors and foreigners. A major propagator of engraving, he works as a teacher in several Brazilian cities. It is due to one of the first known artistic appropriations of lithography: lithographic stones previously used in the printing of industrial labels are reworked by the artist who maintains traces of previous recordings. woodcut. However, it can also switch between the stain and the dash, approaching, for example, the work of Aldemir Martins (1922-2006) and other artists of the 1940s and 1950s generation. In 1968, the artist is Invited by the sertanistas Orlando Villas Boas and Noel Nütels for a stay in the Xingu National Park, during which he makes about 200 drawings on the habits and customs of the indigenous people. For art criticism Nilza Procopiak, in these works, the artist demonstrates a remarkable mastery of form and technique, both in the gradation between the thickness of the lines, in the planes, contours, in the observation of the geometric motifs present in basketry and ceramics.
Poty is also dedicated to the realization of monumental works in wood, concrete and ceramics. Its murals, stained glass and panels have a wide relationship with their engraver activity, mainly due to the approximation to the visuality of the woodcut. For the scholar Orlando Dasilva, a common element in his production is the vigor present in the drawings of the drawings, in the decisive and deep cut of the wood for the engraving, as well as in the carving and in the murals.
Criticism
"By analyzing Poty's set of recorded work, we have to learn, even if it is in a panoramic look, of his works in other techniques. How to reconcile your mural work, especially when concrete, with graphic works in metal, wood or stone; why does the decorative line, almost always present in your xilos, rarely appear in your calcogravures?
In your xylo we often find links with The mural, even because in numerous cases the material used is the same, the wood.
But there is a common line that unites all his work: it is the vigor, either in the energetic line of his drawings thrown quickly and nervously on paper, or in the decisive cut and bottom in the wood for the xylo, the carving or the wall; It is the paint greasing the stone on its litters and creating striking contrasts; It is the accentuated relief of its concrete murals; It is the deep wound caused by the dry tip or acid in the engravings in metal.
Knowing your personality, it is only possible to understand the decorativism of your murals and xylos, not only through the study of the material used, but also becoming aware of its ease and manual skill, still adding the memory Visual, which facilitates the simplified line and racing. This easy coexistence with the technique, without the need to evidence it, makes us find Poty in all his work, even though this is expressed with different languages. the study we now do. They facilitate the understanding of their other works with different techniques, show them their beginnings, with the artist presenting himself totally stripped of schooling, which sometimes drowns the student's personal personality. The engraving in metal, among all the works of different techniques that he practices, is the one that best reveals the designer who, in turn, is the one who best discloses his 'I'. We want to emphasize here that, above all, Poty is a designer".
Orlando Dasilva
DASILVA, Orlando. Poty, the graphic artist. Curitiba: Curitiba Cultural Foundation, 1980.
"Poty is due to one of the first known artistic appropriations of the lithographic stone used industrially in the printing of labels, cans, and others, which find further echoes in Lotus Lobo and João Câmara: using the Ciccillo Matarazzo, with which the industry of this company printed cans, generalized their artistic use, which he also did in Bahia, putting at the service of the artists, to whom he taught lithography, the stones that printed cigar stamps. Poty's graphic work is monumental, both in small formats, such as vignettes and illustrations of books by the publisher José Olympio, where it illustrates, among others, Guimarães Rosa and Mário Palmério, and in the large ones, in which the same stylized cleaning of the little ones is printed, the most sometimes rhythmically. In Poty, the styling of the drawing can seek the effect of woodcuts, because, very stylized in the cut and in the alternating fills with voids, it goes to the essentialist: essentialist, the work of Poty in all techniques, excepting, generically, the metal, to mimic the woodcut, certainly in the hoist, but also in the stained glass and concrete panel. Its design, however, can alternate the blur and trace, like Aldemir Martins in another key, both of which are found in the conjugation of the very open stain and the very marked line, a current trace in the 40s and 50s".
