Mario Cravo Neto (Salvador BA 1947 - idem 2009)
Mario Cravo Neto was a photographer, sculptor and draftsman. He received his first instruction in drawing and sculpture from his father, Mario Cravo Júnior. In 1964, he traveled to Berlin with his father, who was taking part in the Artists in Residence program sponsored by the Ford Foundation. There, he came into contact with the Italian artist Emilio Vedova and the photographer Max Jakob. In 1968, he moved to New York and studied at the Art Students League under Jack Krueger, one of the forerunners of conceptual art in the city. During this period, he made the color photo series On the Subway and produced his first acrylic sculptures. He returned to Brazil in 1970. In 1975, he was in a car accident and had to stop working for a year. Afterwards, he devoted himself to studio photography, created installations and developed photographic works on themes related to Candomblé and Catholic religiosity.
His books include Ex-Votos (1986), Salvador (1999), Laróyè (2000), Na Terra sob Meus Pés [On the Earth beneath My Feet] (2003) and O Tigre do Dahomey - A Serpente de Whydah [The Tiger of Dahomey - The Serpent of Whydah] (2004). He received the National Photography Award from the Fundação Nacional de Arte – Funarte in 1996; the Price Waterhouse prize at the Panorama da Arte Brasileira of the Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo – MAM/SP in 1997; and the award for best photographer of the year from the Associação Paulista de Críticos de Arte – APCA in 1980, 1995 and 2005.
Critical Commentary
Mario Cravo Neto works most often with black-and-white photography. As the scholar Rubens Fernandes Júnior points out, his photographs show precision in photographic description, recalling the legacy of his earlier work in sculpture. In his works, he uses low light, tight framing and selective focus which, by giving dimension to volumes and exploring different textures, emphasizes the primary aim of each photo. The tactile sensation is another interesting aspect of his work, heightened by the play of light and shadow.
His photography moves through religious and mystical imagery, above all that of Catholicism and Candomblé. For Fernandes Júnior, there is a direct relationship between Cravo Neto's work and that of the photographer and ethnographer Pierre Verger, especially in addressing the spiritual possession of the body. For the Ex-Voto series, the photographer used votive sculptures in carved wood, now held at the Fundação Gregório de Mattos in Salvador. The photographs in the series reveal great sensitivity in the use of light, enhancing the planes, carvings and reliefs of the pieces.
He frequently focuses on fragments of the human body and at times associates them with objects, such as balls or stones, or with animals, giving the image a sense of strangeness and, at times, a ritualistic character. His work, as the critic Casimiro Xavier de Mendonça emphasizes, is neither narrative, nor documentary, nor anthropological. It is the support for a visual investment that seeks to heighten man's relationship with the unknown through unexpected associations, above all the opposition between objects and bodies.
Critiques
"Even though Mario Cravo Neto uses a centered figure against an infinite background, and even though he has worked with unusual angles of the human body - as other artists have also done - his signature has managed to be unmistakable and individual. First, there is a respect for the human being, who gains a sacred space and is not seen merely as an object of seduction. He also recovers a collective memory, by giving simple, everyday people their lost dignity and the pleasure of self-representation. And even in photos of human types he recorded in Salvador, which could have been marked by tropical exoticism, the result deserves closer attention for the rigor with which he chooses his images and the way he measures light and shadow. "Each image, carefully and consciously produced, comes from a complex game played out between the mimesis of the body that experiences and represents, and the explicit legacy of cultural experiences. Mario Cravo Neto prefers to make his portraits according to an avowed aesthetic concept, in which what matters is the tension and restlessness perceived in the constitutive paradigms of his photography. He believes that all creative work has a mystical background, that is, a relationship between man and the unknown, the imponderable, the unforeseeable. The photographs show the diversity of an artist who defined himself in the face of multiple influences. The experience of time can be shown in a variety of ways: at times he is the formalist photographer in search of organicity, at times the photographer who records figuration drawn directly from religious imagery, at times the memorialist photographer trying to preserve the sense of mystical revelation through the allegories of rituals.
