Marco Tulio Resende (Belo Horizonte MG 1950)
Marco Tulio Resende is a painter, draftsman and teacher. He studied visual arts at the Escola Guignard in Belo Horizonte between 1971 and 1974, a period in which he was in contact with Amilcar de Castro (1920 - 2002), Sara Ávila (1932) and Lotus Lobo (1943). He took part in the 12th Bienal Internacional de São Paulo [São Paulo International Biennial] in 1973. In 1975, he held his first solo exhibition at the gallery of the Instituto Cultural Brasil-Estados Unidos [Brazil-United States Cultural Institute] in Belo Horizonte. Between 1975 and 1979, he completed a master's degree at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (Artic), in the United States, as a Fulbright Commission grantee. In 1977, he received the drawing prize at the 9th Salão Nacional de Arte Contemporânea de Belo Horizonte [Belo Horizonte National Contemporary Art Salon] and, in 1978, an honorable mention in the Fellowship Contest promoted by Artic.
Back in Belo Horizonte in 1979, he began teaching at the Escola Guignard. In 1990, he obtained a Goethe Institut grant to study in Germany. In 1998, he was invited to take part as a visiting artist at Sheffield Hallam University in Sheffield, England.
Critical Commentary
Marco Tulio Resende has a diverse production, working with painting, drawing, printmaking, objects, installations and book-objects. His work is marked by an intimate character which, according to the artist himself, stems from the attempt to see himself in the world, to mirror himself and recognize himself in it.
The artist creates book-objects built from paintings and drawings. For the visual artist and art critic Márcio Sampaio (1941), in these works Resende also writes his own story: his work requires great concentration from the viewer, to follow each of the moments of his life presented there and to continue reading. For Sampaio, the forms he makes, such as bone, hammer, tower, hand, carnation or flower, allude to feelings experienced by the artist, such as losses, fears, desires and renunciations.
Resende creates works from everyday materials such as wood, fabric, earth, crystals and pieces of iron. According to the art historian Aracy Amaral, in Carro [Car], 1999, the artist alludes to the means of transport through a construction of wood and clay, thus recreating it in a precarious way. In Ilha [Island], 1999, he presents a wooden basket closed with metal straps, inside which he places stones. In Jardim [Garden], 1999, he builds mounds of clay of similar shape on a wooden base. The works generate a certain disconcertment in the observer. They are unusual images, composed of objects the artist comes across in his daily life and which can take on diverse meanings. They also represent fragments of his personal memory, recovered in his works.
For the art historian Tadeu Chiarelli, in his works on paper the artist creates a specific exploratory field for the formulation of his own imagery. In these works, amputated forms of the human body become modular elements endowed with a strong dramatic concentration.
Critiques
"Through continuous research, Marco Túlio Resende engages with nature, with things and with beings in a mysterious dialogue, through which a constant permutation takes place and his vocabulary is established, his dense and severe inner monologue. Using banal objects, Marco Túlio does not intend to give them a new aesthetic category or to alter their condition in any way. No. The artist intends to discover the magic of things, the rite hidden behind the mask, and to reinvent gesture and gaze. This is the meaning of his work: to give a new vision of things we no longer even see or, further, to recover the magic of neglected forms and make them evident to our eyes. This, perhaps, is the artist's mission par excellence: not to alter existing aesthetic categories, but to illuminate them; not to create new categories, but to rediscover them. His works express this stance well: through synthesis rather than analysis of the forms worked, the artist carries out his game, his reason and his vision. It is up to us to follow him in his arrangements, which do not seek to modify the existing order, but rather to perceive it, grasp it and communicate its most secret meaning. With their suggestions of relics, of strange incantatory elements and their totemic allusions, these works do not impose themselves on the viewer's eyes. Rather, they invite us to travel an unknown, uncertain itinerary, but one always full of what is so dear to man: the discovery of the imponderable, of the mystery whose key we sometimes lose but always long to find again".
