Biography

Marcelo Grassmann (São Simão 1925 - São Paulo 2013)

Marcelo Grassmann was an important recorder, designer, illustrator and Brazilian professor, whose work is marked by the refined technique and for his involvement with the engraving and the drawing. Born in São Simão, São Paulo, he began his artistic training at the Escola Profissional Men's do Brás, where he studied foundry, mechanics and carving in wood between 1939 and 1942. From 1943 onwards, Grassmann began to dedicate himself to woodcut, a technique that would become one of the most striking characteristics of his work.

His career as an illustrator began in the literary supplement of the Diário de São Paulo between 1947 and 1948, and, later, he also contributed with illustrations to the O Estado de S. Paulo newspaper. From 1949 onwards, Grassmann moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he continued his work as an illustrator, now to the newspaper of the State of Guanabara. During this period, he deepened his studies at the Lyceum of Arts and Crafts, where he dedicated himself to metal engraving with Henrique Oswald and lithography with Poty.

In 1952, Grassmann moved to Salvador, where he had the opportunity to work with the renowned sculptor Mário Cravo Júnior. Its international trajectory was consolidated in 1953, when it was awarded a trip abroad by the National Salon of Modern Art (SNAM). He went to study at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna, further expanding his knowledge in drawing, lithography and metal engraving techniques. Throughout his career, Grassmann gained recognition and his work was acquired by the Government of the State of São Paulo in 1969, integrating the collection of the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo (PESP).

In 1978, the house where he was born in São Paulo. Simão was transformed into a museum, a tribute to his artistic and cultural contribution, being listed by CONDEPHAAT (Council for the Defense of Historical, Artistic, Archaeological and Tourist Heritage of the State of São Paulo). Between 1991 and 1992, Grassmann was a fellow at the Vitae Foundation, which helped to further consolidate its relevance in the São Paulo and national artistic scene. His work reflects a strong connection with the traditional techniques of engraving, while bringing an innovative and deeply Brazilian perspective.

Critical Comment

At the beginning of his career, the contact with the work of Oswaldo Goeldi is highlighted. (1895 - 1961) and also with that of Lívio Abramo (1903 - 1992). In the first woodcuts, arabesques and dots are present obtained through top wood. In 1949, he made the series Night Knights, with military figures in black, cut out on a white background. Subsequently, the presence of fantastic figures appears in its theme, such as mermaids, harpies (fabulous monsters with a woman's face and a bird's body), small demons, horses, fish, human beings and in part animals, related to a magical universe. He starts to use lithogravure, in which his design proves to be more fluent.

For the criticism Aracy Amaral, after a work of character more linked to expressionism, at the beginning of his career, Grassmann began to explore the mythical and fantastic universe. The artist often resorts to motifs linked to the medieval and Renaissance imagination. Throughout his career, he is interested in art history and mythology. As the artist points out, his work has as references the beings created by the painter Hieronymus Bosch (ca.1450 - 1516) and the work of Alfred Kubin (1877 - 1959), with whom he has contact on the occasion of his stay. in Vienna.

The artist combines an extremely rich graphic symbology with a very personal and refined technique. For Lívio Abramo "between the artist's complex inner world and plastic accomplishment, the path is short: complicated arabesques, strange symbiosis of human beings and animals, metamorphoses revealing desires and anguish, poetic sense and great formal freedom...". One of the most respected Brazilian engravers, Marcelo Grassmann, reveals himself to be a deep connoisseur of the graphic means and techniques.

Criticism

"Marcelo Grassmann found, from an early age, in drawing and engraving the means of language capable of It is better to define it, also discovering, at first, within the limits of German expressionism, the family source of his own way of seeing and reflecting the world. Throughout the evolution of his work, which is included today among the most prominent in the Brazilian panorama, one can observe the progressive overcoming of the influence Expressionist initial for a warm entry into the Fantastic area, plunged into affinities ranging from Bosch and Brueghel until, in our century, the Austrian Alfred Kubin.

Emerging of a certain atmosphere of lyrical medievalism or Renaissance fantasy in knights, ladies and maidens ready for war, amazement, silence and love. Grassmann was gradually populated by new figures tensely reassured in the mixture of contrasts between the light and the dark, between light and darkness, between good and evil, between the truce and the combat."
Roberto Punctual
PONTUAL, Roberto. Marcelo Grassmann. In: GRASSMANN, Marcelo. The Magical World of Marcelo Grassmann: 70 years. São Paulo: Arte Applied Gallery, 1995. p. 48.

"Grassmann's fascination is actually born of different qualities. For example, from its unmistakable iconographic universe, always associated with the Middle Ages: warriors, knights, mounts, streamers and helmets; ladies of sweetness, probably only apparent, which are associated with elves or monsters; and an extensive imaginary bestiary, which at other times became frightening. One can try to explain this Grassmann universe as a kind of unconscious memory or Atavism of a German descendant. But this explanation, in addition to being an artificial environment, is unnecessary. What really matters is that Grassmann belongs to a spiritual family of artists who have always existed at different moments in history and have always given expression to the 'dark side' and Mystery of the human soul.

And, in fact, this side and this iconography are even high in the present day. The crisis of contemporary man, his anguish and uncertainty, is projected and recognized in these indecisive mists".

Testimonies

"I think my work as an illustrator was very important. First, due to the imposition of the text, it was not what I wanted, but what was given to me. It's hard for you to get wonderful writers, but when you're going to translate it into illustration, it doesn't give you anything. A Drummond, I keep sweating on top of his text, reading, rereading, reading, rereading, it's poetic, it's something that ends there. Adding what? It's almost impossible Some writers are great to illustrate, they're full of images, it doesn't matter that they are the same as we design, at least they suggest a lot. Rethinking, it is a material that suffers from fatigue. An elaborate metal engraving can become bright, seeming to be executed directly and a very elaborate lithography gets tired. The kitchen of the metal engraving is very complicated and is much more fascinating than the kitchen of the lithography. (...)

The accident is part of the creative process. When taking a pencil to draw on paper, the paper, even if it had a manufacturing control, would be subject to different humidity and there would be variations. The accident in the work of art is the most part and your head will control the rest. (...)

Usually I face a plate with the will to make a certain idea, the idea can already preexist, as a very rude form of what will become, but it will suffer a whole metamorphosis of language, the language of metal, or even the lithography. Each of these languages, even if it starts from an image that has already been studied, even gains a whole other content at a time when it is transferred from one graphical language to another. Even once recorded, the plate also suffers, it is brutalized, it is a back-and-forth. Sometimes I move on to other things within what was already ready, I end up getting back to the starting point, that's what's fascinating. I would say that this is the fascination of metal engraving. I always thought that the great moment of the creation of metal engraving is the one in which you say: 'This plate is lost!'. Because then you say, 'What can I do?' It's something like a challenge. Of course, if you take a virgin plate, it's much simpler to re-elaborate everything, but it would already be another approach. The challenge, exactly, is not to recover a plate, but how to make a failure become a work of art. [...]

When I am asked why I settle more in a certain period than in another, it is very curious, because, although formally the Renaissance has given me much more than the average age, the average age was more loaded with inner things, in my view, than the Renaissance, which already started with a formalist concern, of style, way, of how to face things, more than what things to be faced with. The Flemishes loved to make hell, because in hell there was the proposal of millions of fantasies. Bosch, for example, goes to all that madness of figures inside armor, half fish, half people, half comic and, deep down, I suffered very important influences from him. Bosch's world is full of diabolisms, fantasies, things that are not everyone's. China, on the other hand, gave me two things: a dragon and a few devils. The Etruscans gave me little, the Egyptians gave me much more, with their religious zoomorfias".
