José Roberto Aguilar (São Paulo SP 1941)
José Roberto Aguilar is a painter, videographer, performer, sculptor, writer, musician and curator. Self-taught, he was part of the Kaos Performatic-Literary Movement in 1956, alongside Jorge Mautner (1941) and José Agripino de Paula. In 1963, he exhibited his paintings at the 7th International Biennial of São Paulo. Considered one of the pioneers of the new figuration in Brazil, he participated in the Opinion 65 Exhibition, at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro (MAM/RJ), in 1965. In this phase, he started to use spray and compressed air pistol in his paintings.
He lived in London between 1969 and 1972, and in New York between 1974 and 1975, when he began his experimentation with video. He returned to São Paulo in 1976. The following year, he participated in the 14th International Biennial of São Paulo with the Cosmic and Latin American Ambulant Anthropophageic Circus Plant, presents this evening: the permanent transformation of the taboo into a totem, in which he used 12 TV monitors on the stage of the Ruth Escobar Theater.
In 1981, he created the musical group Banda Performática and released the book A Divina Comédia Brasileira. In 1983, he became a disciple of the Indian spiritual leader Rajneesh, starting to sign his works as Aguilar Vigyan. In 1989, he performed the performance taken by Bastille, with the participation of 300 artists, assisted by about 10,000 people in São Paulo.
During the 1990s, he produced paintings on giant canvas and glass sculptures. and ceramics. Between 1995 and 2002, he was director of the Casa das Rosas Cultural Space, in São Paulo. In 2003, he was appointed representative of the Ministry of Culture in the capital of São Paulo.
Critical Comment
From the 1950s onwards, José Roberto Aguilar carries out works that have a magic-expressionist character, in dialogue with the Abstraction, characterized by the spontaneity in the painting, obtained by the quick application of the paint. In the Football series 1 (1966), it uses color spots and drained paints, in contrasting colors, causing a great impact due to the fantastic character of the shapeless figures. By 1963, his work began to reveal political-social concerns. The artist performs experiments with spray paintings and guns on large canvas surfaces. Through these techniques, it obtains original effects, capturing the atmosphere of the lights in neon, typical of today's metropolises.
One of the pioneers in the work with video art in Brazil, Aguilar reveals, throughout his career, the ease of moving from a support to another. In 1981, he created the band Performática, which brings together painting, music, theater and circus. In the mid-1980s, he created paintings in which the gestures and insertion of handwriting against a contrasting background stand out.
In 2002, at the Rio de Poemas exhibition, Aguilar performs a series of inspired canvases. In literary texts, such as the short story A Terceira Margem do Rio, by Guimarães Rosa (1908 - 1967). The attraction for literature and mythology are constant in the artist's production. It appropriates writing and graphic signs, making them integral elements of its canvas. In his paintings, he presents a multidirectional dynamic and reveals the articulation of emotions. On the canvases of the Rio de Poemas series, the artist reduced the gestures, producing almost diaphanous paintings
Critical
"from before Aguilar maintained the disposition of visual impact and aggression conceptual. Today, the figures that inhabit the works have reached that point of critical - caricatured saturation that transfers them to the area of anonymity of graffiti. The borderline between good and bad taste is broken, there is no longer a way to define them and contain them, they are finally one and only one thing. But anthropophagy is individualized and valued by the fact that the apparently chaotic and automated accumulation of every kind of signal on the frame, gestures figuring and disfiguring, scribbling, commenting or camouflaging Writing still maintains a lot of rational action, in these narratives with signs and characters that refer us to Dubuffet or Enrico Baj, without ceasing to be quite ours. His figures and references to the landscape portray more, in the sense of investigation implicit in the term, than just show".

"José Roberto Aguilar composed with the musician Jorge Mautner and the writer José Agripino the 'KAOS Group'. European, but incorporating the abstract expressionism of the North American Pollock, and more recently rock elements (created and was the leader of a performative band, even recording records), and religious (as a sect member created by Rajneesh currently signs his canvases with the Name Vigyan), is an essentially urban artist, who captures and transmits the frenetic rhythm of the modern megalopolis. whole texts by Oswald de Andrade, Borges, Bukowski. The letter as an icon. These linguistic signs evenly occupy the screen space or appear related to human figures, areas or color bands. crudely and seem to maintain an incomprehensible dialogue, in the manner of Ionesco. But the artist feels good in his torrential style and in producing, with images, the infernal noise of the modern city."

"Aguilar has always treated the painting in an ecstatic way. Color orgy exposing traces of her body in turns, curves, express and printed movements on the ink layers on the canvas. of the touch ink on the skin screen. With a similar intention, he pioneered the video art. the brush camera retracing the gestures. sucking the surface of people, things, colors, revealed by their transformation into luminous flow; pulsating lines. 'The Devil's Eye'. Without abandoning the painting - Porto Seguro where he has always left for other discoveries -, Aguilar now arrives at a new crossroads-synthesis of the various means through which the image runs. where matter and virtual reality feed, opening virgin territories and repertoires, to be explored."

Testimonies
"Who taught me to paint was Mautner (Jorge). One day he arrived and said, full of security and arrogance: Let's paint. My grandfather is a painter. I go there, I look like he does and bring all the information. He spent an afternoon with his grandfather and came back: I already know how to paint. We have to buy a canvas, turpentine, some brushes and paints. He did it all and we watched Mautner paint. We also bought our material. When I opened the turpentine tube, that smell enveloped me. It was as if he had activated the Aladdin lamp. The smell evoked all the imagined and unimagined wonders. At the time I felt that painting would be very magical, a ritual. . . I think my madness came from my father. He was a child, a man who showed all his wonder before the man. Ingenious, creative. During the war he bought a huge batch of miniature trains, hundreds of wagons and locomotives. In 1949, he set up an amazing railway park at the Prestes Maia Gallery. Then he organized the biggest film library in São Paulo, the queen, rented films. It was at the beginning of television. Later, it built the largest button factory in Latin America. It also has the maternal side, my mother played the piano very well. Today, my father lives a zen placidity."

"Although these pieces talk about 'Mahabharata', they have no desire to be, they could be anything. They are anthropomorphic pieces not conceived as representation. They can be anything. They work as pieces of virtual reality, metaphors of art. Glass sculptures would be syllables, frozen words from Ganesha's writing - untranslatable through logic and resistant to Cartesian dualism. They can be seen as brushstrokes. . . This exhibition was born from the proposal of a friend of mine therapist, so that I could make an adaptation of the Mahabharata for the theater. It ended up being carried out through three series of paintings, the last of which was dedicated to the 'Bahgvad Gita', the one that uses stronger colors."
