Jenner Augusto (Aracaju1924, Salvador 2003)
Jenner Augusto was a painter, poster, illustrator, draftsman and engraver. He lived in several cities in Sergipe and, in the city of Lagarto, produced posters for the local cinema. In Laranjeiras, around 1940, he studied the painting by Horácio Hora. He returned to Aracaju in 1944, a period in which he dedicated himself to painting while working in commerce. In 1949, he made free panels in a modernist style for the decoration of Bar Cacique.
In the same year, he moved to Salvador, where he worked as an assistant at the studio of Mario Cravo Júnior. At that time, he participated with Lygia Sampaio and Rubem Valentim from the controversial exhibition Novos Artistas Baianos, at the Historical and Geographical Institute of Bahia. He developed in the city custom plastic works, with emphasis on the fresco evolution of man, carried out between 1953 and 1954 for the Carneiro Ribeiro Educational Center. Pancetti, who recommended it to critics and collectors. He also met James and Jorge Amado. In the 1960s, he dedicated himself to the painting of the Alagados neighborhood and the landscapes of Salvador. In 1966, he was invited to inaugurate the Bahian Exhibition in Philadelphia. The following year, he traveled through France, Italy, the Netherlands, England and Belgium, where he met Paul Delvaux. On these trips, he made notes, studies and drawings, which were gathered in an album published in 1970.
Illustrated the book Tenda dos Milagres, by Jorge Amado. His work is the subject of at least three publications: Jenner: A Arte Moderna da Bahia, by Roberto Pontual, published by the publisher Civilização Brasileira; Os Alagados de Jenner, an album with five serigraphs and text by Adonias Filho, edited by Ranulpho Editora de Arte; and Jenner, an album book with color and black and white reproductions since his first works, published by the Official Press of Bahia.
Criticism
"When he suddenly breaks, therefore, with the still waters of academism (...) and paints the panéis do cacique, Jenner begins to transpose to his work, in an aggressive and committed way, the direct experience he had had of the sertanejo misery. At last it attracts even the formula of almost abstract geometrization of the background space of the Brodósqui painter, to merge influences from Expressionism and Cubism."
