Biography

Fernando Coelho (Salvador BA 1939)

Fernando Coelho is a painter, draftsman, graphic artist, illustrator and publicist. He was interested in the graphic arts from an early age, working professionally in the advertising field. In 1961, he received the first prize in a poster contest promoted by the Government of the State of Bahia. He held his first solo exhibition in 1964, at Galeria Querino, in Salvador. In 1997, he illustrated the book Castro Alves: a commemorative edition of the 150th anniversary of Antônio de Castro Alves, alongside other artists, in a publication by Fundação Banco do Brasil and Odebrecht.

Criticism

"Fernando Coelho is a figurative painter, resource designer and sensitive colorist. Its theme has ranged from urban scenes and career landscapes to the series of tightrope walkers - so evocative of a Miró - and, very recently, to Flores. There is a certain mannerism in its pictorial work, and some concession to the easy and consumable in its formal repertoire".
